Original version[edit]

It's actually well known that the original version of this song was written as "I love to lie awake in bed" at Brant Lake Camp in the 1920s where Arthur Schwartz was a counselor along with Lorenz Hart and other future stars of the musical comedy world. His son Jonathan can provide dates and other data. The original lyric: I love to lie awake in bed Right after taps, I pull the flaps* above my head and let the stars shine on my pillow o what a light the moonbeams shed I feel so happy I could cry and tears are born right in the corn-er of my eye to be at home with Ma was never like this I could live forever like this I love to lie awake a while and go to sleep with a smile
