Trappedinburnley, I think this is beginning to look useful. Thanks for all your help.

Name[edit]

Is there any reason why this article is titled 'Honor of Clitheroe' rather than the more conventional British English 'Honour of Clitheroe'? The latter is more in keeping with the parent article Honour (feudal land tenure), and articles on the individual Honours, Honour of Grafton, Honour of Lancaster, Honour of Peverel, Honour of Wallingford, and Honour of Richmond. The term 'Honour of Clitheroe' is twice as prevalent on google books than 'Honor of Clitheroe', which would suggest this should be the title per WP:COMMONNAME. I would be bold and move this myself, but I thought I would post this here in case someone wanted to put forward an argument for the existing name. Benea (talk) 10:30, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I can't think of a reason why the 'u' is omitted, but then I've not edited the article. I turned to the Victoria County History for answers, but it isn't especially clear. The section on Clitheroe from volume 6 for the County of Lancaster uses "honor" [1], but then other mentions such as this one in volume 4 use "honour". The search results for "honour" [2] turn up 148 pages and "honor" 95 [3]. I would think that the variance is because either is considered acceptable, but Wikipedia has the opportunity to introduce some inter-article consistency, so I support moving this article to Honour of Clitheroe. While I have been involved with this article I can’t offer much insight into why we expanded is redirect over the other. Mainly it was because the handful of existing links pointed to it. It is my understanding the spelling was traditionally interchangeable and is technically still correct today, if unconventional. I don’t have a problem with moving it, however just incase you decide not to, I'm going to re-point Honour of Clitheroe here (So I don't forget again). --Trappedinburnley (talk) 20:38, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Given that everyone is in favour of the move, I've tagged the redirect Honour of Clitheroe for deletion to clear the way for the move of this article. Once this has been done a note can be added to the article if desired to explain that 'Honor' is an alternative variant used historically. Benea (talk) 23:19, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
