First settlement[edit]

The first settlement was recently discussed at Talk:New Zealand. There are several articles using the first settlement date, New Zealand, History of New Zealand, Māori, Dunedin, History of Otago, and this page. Any change to the date should be applied to all these articles, to avoid an inconsistency. I can suggest because New Zealand is the most scrutinized, a change be discussed there first and that article sets the precedent for the others.

The reference from 1983 can probably be discounted as being out-of-date - per the Te Ara sources there have been dozens of publications on the topic since then.

Te Ara says "Many methods have been used to determine the date when they first arrived, and when they settled. Although no single method is foolproof, all show remarkable agreement that permanent Polynesian settlement was established around 1300."[1]

In the Penguin History of New Zealand by Michael King in 2003, p48 says "All verifiable evidence - from archaeology, genetic analysis, carbon dating, burnt pollen analysis and disposition of volcanic ash showers - points to New Zealand having been first settled in the thirteenth century AD". Name change to History of the Dunedin urban area[edit]

The Dunedin History section of the Dunedin page is already about the same length as this page, covering the same material. I am concerned that between this, Port Chalmers and History of the Otago Region there will be too much repetition. I would like to suggest that this page becomes a history of the Dunedin urban area and that the Dunedin page brings together, Middlemarch, Port, the Peninsula and Taieri PlainsDushan Jugum. Thanks (Hazhk) I changed it to a 'C', I know all? the problems with the page and they are many. My long term goal is to help make it a Good Artical, but it needs a lot before then. (Dushan Jugum (talk) 02:01, 22 January 2019 (UTC))[reply]

@Dushan Jugum: That seems fair enough. I believe the assessment criteria is focused primarily on the length, breadth of the content and "completeness", which I think is more than adequate. One observation for improvement is the spelling of te reo Māori words. The usage of diacritics on the vowels is inconsistent; some of the more common words use them but most of the Māori words don't use any macrons. I know that at least a couple of the older cited sources use spellings without any macrons, which might be an issue. I am tempted to change some of the more obvious spellings (e.g, Ōtepoti), but for now it might be better to leave spellings for sake of consistency. I believe there has been a discussion on the WikiProject page regarding Māori words. --Hazhk (talk) 02:16, 22 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I am pro macron but still often miss them out of ignorance. Thanks Hazhk, I have added it to the list. I did an edit run once for Maori/Māori on some Top NZ project pages and was not impressed. I am now that person who has just learned a new rule and judges everyone by it. Always feel free to be as bold as you like with any edit I have made anywhere.
