Māori name[edit]

Tāmaki Makau Rau ('Isthmus of one thousand lovers', also translated as 'Tamaki-the bride sought by a hundred suitors')[1], now known as Auckland...

Can anybody resolve the above contradiction - differing translations might exist, but surely 'thousand' and 'hundred' would have different words? MadMaxDog 01:58, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Looking on www.maoridictionary.co.nz, one meaning given for rau is "hundred", and makau-rau is translated as "to have many lovers". Some variation on the "hundred lovers" translation seems most common these days; "isthmus of one thousand lovers" seems a less literal translation. -- Avenue (talk) 12:32, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
