Constructive Criticism[edit]

Polk may be worthy of inclusion. This draft appears to be a CV, however, and as a result the article looks like Vanispamcruftisement. Your opening sentence looks like a brief bio of speaker at continuing education seminar. Its not very informative. Was he born and raised in Jackson? When did he attend Harvard? Where did he get his undergraduate degree? Try a chronological history. Sad to say, the entire piece reads the same way. There is an appalling like of citations.

Try to avoid poor style such as the sentence: "A signifigant number of future Chairmen of Surgery served as either residents or faculty under his tenure." What is a significant number? Chairman of Surgery where? Louisville? Harvard? John Hopkins? It really should cite to some actual verifiable facts.

Or this sentence: He served as the editor of The American Journal of Surgery for many years, and was honored with an unprecedented issue in his honor in August of 2005. How many years? From when to when? Is this info hard to find out? How do we know it was unprecedented? Unprecedented for that journal? Unprecedented in the annals of all medical journals? In short the sentence sounds like hype. If he is signficant, he doesn't need hype- the facts will do nicely.

Awards and Honors

No quibble about the Senate Resolution. Why is it last, since it seems the most impressive. Your list is neither alpabetical nor chronological.

The rest reads like hype. Hype is like breast implants, nice to look at perhaps, but not very real.

Caritas Foundation- 2002 Ephraim McDowell Physician of the Year

Is this the medical equivalent of appearing on Time Magazine? Off hand it would be more impressive if it was an award from the AMA or JAMA or the New England Journal of Medicine. Those are presitigious (well, not so sure about the AMA :-) organizations that ordinary people have heard of. I daresay the vast majority of readers don't know Caritas Foundation from the Couldn't Careless Foundation. If you are going to include it, you should find away of explaining its significance.

Ditto the Southern Medical Association- 1989 Distinguished Service Award.

Ditto Academy of Surgical Research - 1998 Jacob Markowitz Award. At the very least link to something which describes these awards, so readers can judge if they are meaningful or just a medical version of being named the Rhubarb Queen of Hooterville. Gfwesq 21:49, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Refusal to add refences but deleting ^{[citation needed]} and unreferenced tag[edit]

I do not understand why Oliver has such a problem with referencing the articles he writes. It has been weeks, and he consistently refuses to provide references. Instead, he just leaves the claim and deletes ^{[citation needed]}. jgwlaw 04:43, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
