Henry de Montherlant[edit]

  Having read the English language Wikipedia entry on Henry de Montherlant,I was surprised to see a very different

biographical entry on the author Henry de Montherlant in Wikipedia in Google France, which would seem to say that

accusations of homosexuality,paedophilia, misogyny and collaboration against the author were myths created by Roger

Peyrefitte and others, were calumnious and not based on any evidence. Why are these recent researched assessments not

even alluded to on any way in English language Wikipedia, which seems to be totally biased against the author?

I have studied Montherlant's work and listened to contemporary discussions on the author on French Radio etc.

The contrast between both entries resembles the difference between Stalin and Mother Theresa.

Montherlant, collaborator?[edit]

I removed the claim stating that Montherlant was a "notorious Nazi collaborator" as this is absolutely untrue; one should refer to the French version of this article to form a better opinion on the matter. However, to explain this to unilingual users, I'd simply say that Montherlant's election to the French Academy already disproves these claims, that he was never considered as a collaborator, and was cleared of all suspicion. He also refused to publish in collaborationist newspapers.

"The only accusation which could be held against him [Montherlant], is not to have sided with the wrong side, but to have refused to take a side at all; it would be about seeing whether or not a writer has the right, during the occupation of his own country, to stay independent and to keep his freedom of mind - if he is authorized, as two sides are fighting for the world, to steer clear of it."

However, the historian Julian Jackson ("France-- The Dark Years 1940-1945" 2001) claims that Montherlant was a pedophile and a collaborationist, as well as a contributor to the pro-Nazi newspaper La Gerbe, earning as much as 140,000 . "Montherlant arrived in Paris in May 1941 after his compulsive pursuit of young boys had led to two close shaves with the police in the unoccupied zone," according to Jackson. During the course of the Occupation, Montherlant's journalism earned him a total of over 140,000 francs. After liberation, Montherlant's name was included on a "black list" of writers who had collaborated, but this came to naught. Still, exactly how Montherlant escaped further criticism and achieved election to the French Academy remains a mystery. ----

Why was he physically set upon in 1968?[edit]

The article says that was "Montherlant was attacked and beaten in the streets of Paris in 1968". Some comments on this - such as the motives and attackers - would be useful. Otherwise, readers are left guessing. Norvo (talk) 00:05, 2 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV tag[edit]

The editor who left the NPOV tag did not leave any comment other than the edit summary: The information present is superficial and biased, in parts homophobic, with no context or additional information, and only a citation as evidence. Here's what it looks like to me.

Orientation. There's a lot about de Montherlant's orientation, perhaps too much. The only truly questionable content I see is the phrase "an active pederast", which is harsh language. I'm changing it.
Collaboration. Seems to be more substance to this. This version condemns him conclusively, while the French-language version of the page paints a different picture entirely, and seems completely credible. Deserves further research.
As another editor noted above, the incident in 1968 is badly phrased and uncited, I'll fix that too. --Lockley (talk) 05:10, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Bisexual[edit]
