Image[edit]

Folks,

The image for this article had bogus source information so its fair use rationale was bogus. I've marked updated the image page accordingly. If anybody has the actual source info please provide it on the image page (otherwise the image should be removed).

Can you say what was "bogus" about the source information? The descriptions identifies it as an Engraving of Henry Schoolcraft by Wellstood and Peters. The image is obviously a cropped version of the image seen here, which also identifies it as an Engraving Wellstood and Peters. More detailed sourcing would be nice, but considering the image was almost certainly published before 1923, it is public domain in the US, which is what the license states. older ≠ wiser 20:14, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

? Ummm, I'm not sure how you want me to respond. The "source" and "author" information provided was simply statements of who uploaded it to the English Wikipedia (Wikipedia is not a source). The info does mention Wellstood and Peters but not in the author information. The Schoolcraft College site you provided, though, seems to confirm that they did create it.

In any event do you know for a fact that the original editor (Decumanus) got it from this site? Or are you guessing? Ideally the actual source should be specified rather than just supposing where an image was obtained from.

Regardless, do you know anything about Wellstood and Peters (I don't). If they went out of business before 1923 (which I'm guessing is the case from just poking around the web quickly) then that is reasonable evidence that it was published before then. If you can say in good faith that you know this to be the case (preferable to provide evidence) then this can be stated on the photo's info page.

I have sent an e-mail to Schoolcraft CC RE: the image. Supposedly it came from a book. Somewhere in the book's credits should be the citation we're looking for. Will share when I get that info. Stay tuned. CJLippert (talk) 19:49, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

@Mcorazao, likewise, I am not sure how to respond. There is no claim made that wikipedia is the source. The image was loaded to commons by a bot that indicated where it (the bot) found the image. The user Decumanus uploaded the file long before the more extremist image copyright paranoia took hold. Back in the day (circa 2004), it was not so unusual to identify an image with terse indications of source, such as Engraving of Henry Schoolcraft by Wellstood and Peters {{PD-US}} which is precisely what Decumanus did. Certainly better information about the source would be nice, but do you seriously have any reason to doubt that it is public domain in the US? older ≠ wiser 23:42, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
