Slant[edit]

The modern ODNB article makes the point of saying that Axon, who wrote the original DNB article, was uncritical about the Corn Law League "myth". Charles Matthews (talk) 07:46, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Location, location, location[edit]

Anybody watching this article care to try and disambiguate "Birtwistle"? I stumbled across Mr Ashworth while researching Hapton near Burnley, to which a now un-locatable area of that name has been suggested.[1] The odd thing is the source cites the DNB when linking Ashworth to that Birtwistle. As mentioned it seems that the Ashworth family owned New Eagley Mills, which although little seems to remain where here 53°36′21″N 2°25′02″W / 53.6057°N 2.4173°W / 53.6057; -2.4173. Now it seems impossible that anyone back then would have commuted that distance on daily basis, as between the two is about 18 miles of the West Pennine Moors. It also seems unlikely that somewhere at existed in 1795 (and apparently for centuries prior) would have vanished by the 1840s ordinance survey maps. However outside of stuff about Ashworth I've not been able to find mention of a Birtwistle near Bolton thus far. And it's interesting that Richard Cobden was printing calico at Sabden near Hapton from 1831. Now this may just be a coincidence but the Starkie family of Huntroyde Hall also near Hapton, owned most of the land around Sabden and Hall i' th' Wood just south of the mills. I'll keep looking--Trappedinburnley (talk) 23:39, 20 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
