Cast listing in the closing credits does not follow the same billing order as in the opening credits[edit]

It may be noted that, in the film's opening credits, 18 cast members are listed. Below is a reproduction of the form in which the cast is depicted:

The on-screen closing credits, on the other hand, list the names of 50 cast members, with the first three, Warren Beatty, Julie Christie and James Mason, billed in the same order as in the opening credits. Jack Warden, billed 8th in the opening, is raised to 4th in the closing. Charles Grodin, Dyan Cannon, Buck Henry and Vincent Gardenia, billed 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th in the opening are thus moved one place down to 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th in the closing. Joseph Maher, billed 9th in the opening, retains the same billing, but Dolph Sweet and R. G. Armstrong, billed 10th and 11th, are moved down to 20th and 21st. 12th-billed John Randolph (actor) goes down to 23rd and 13th-billed William Sylvester has the biggest drop in the closing, falling to 39th place.

Among the remaining five names in the opening credits, 14th-billed Keene Curtis goes down to 29th, but 15th-billed Hamilton Camp is raised to 10th place, 16th-billed Jeannie Linero is raised to 13th, 17th-billed Arthur Malet is raised above her, to 11th, while Stephanie Faracy, billed 18th and last in the opening, is raised just below him, to 12th.

As for the 32 names (in the 50-name closing credits cast) that are not listed in the opening credits, the highest billing, 14th, goes to GARDENER    Harry D. K. Wong [who, as far as can be determined, had only three other acting credits, one in 1980 and two in 1984], followed by 15th-billed SECURITY GUARD    George J. Manos [who had 11 other acting credits], 16th-billed PETERS    Larry Block, 17th-billed CONWAY    Frank Campanella, 18th-billed TOMARKEN    Bill Sorrells [the character's relatively-uncommon name, "Tomarken", is also the surname of 38th-billed Peter Tomarken, a television personality and game show host whose character name in the film's credits is REPORTER] and 19th-billed TV INTERVIEWER    Dick Enberg. The next-billed name in the closing credits, the 20th, is that of Dolph Sweet, listed in the opening credits.

The cast list that appears in the article, follows the 50-name order of the closing credits which, after listing the 50th name, TV COLOR ANALYST    Al DeRogatis, list in alphabetical order [under the header "FEATURING"] 16 of the 32 names that appear only in the closing credits. For comparison purposes only, a second column is provided which lists (in italics) the other 16 names, also in alphabetical order:

Guardian Angel[edit]

I am not sure it's clear or even implied that Buck Henry is Joe Pendleton's Guardian Angel. ('m not even sure he's an angel (Referred to The Escort, he might just be an employee of the afterlife.)

Does someone know otherwise -- is he an angel, and is he Joe Pendleton's Guardian Angel? DriftyDriftwood (talk) 02:31, 18 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
