I'm actually considering dropping this section all together since it doesn't tell us anything about the series (other that it references other media in its work) and is little better than trivia. Anything more that could be included could be easily called trivia, and then the referencing in such a section is usually shotty at best.--十八 04:54, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Title[edit]

If I'm right (which I rarely am anyway), "Hayate no Gotoku" doesn't mean "Hayate the Combat Butler" at all. Gotoku means something on the line of "Five Qualities" or "Five Virtues". According to Freedict, it means "The Five Virtues" (or "tripod").

I'm not totally sure, but I believe that "Hayate no Gotoku" is the official title, and not "Hayate the Combat Butler" - mainly because of the opening sequence in which he states "While watching 'Hayate no Gotoku'..." (ハヤテのゴトクの見れときは Hayate no Gotoku no miretoki ha...)

Shouldn't the full title be "Hayate no Gotoku: Hayate the Combat Butler" or something more to that extent?DarthMonkey 02:28, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Japanese title, which means nothing like what you have up there (it's a comparative adverb used exclusively for negative comparisons), is untranslatable. Hayate the Combat Butler is the official English title. Doceirias 02:37, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes, the Japanese come up with their own English subtitle for a series they do. This was done with "Aa, Megami-sama" which Fujishima-sensei gave the 'official' English subtitle of "Ah! My Goddess." Of course Dark Horse and AnimEigo didn't like that name and changed it to "Oh My Goddess" (yeah, I know they got permission from Fujishima-sensei). Anyway, my point is that unless the R1 licensor decides to give it a 2nd English title, "Hayate the Combat Butler" is the official English title from the Japanese creator.AstroNerdBoy 05:03, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I already figured it would be untranslatable considering we don't call it "Five Qualities Hayate" (which sounds stupid anyway). I know that light novel's title. but, I can't speak English. Because I am a Japanese student. Well, I say this title this light novel is "Hayate no gotoku! haruyasumi no hakuoh gakuin ni maborosi no sanzen'in nagi o mita(ハヤテのごとく！　春休みの白皇学院に幻の三千院ナギを見た)". haruyasumi means spring holiday`s. gakuin means school.-Imuzak (talk) 14:31, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nagi's Name[edit]

What's with the ;Nagi Sanzen'in (三千院 ナギ, Sanzen'in Nagi)? I'm not a kanji expert at all, but it doesn't make much sense for an apostrophe to be there, considering the fact that apostrophes are used in contractions of words using the latin alphabet. There shouldn't (to my knoledge) be an apostrophe in the Romanization of a Japanese name. So is it supposed to be a substitute for the double acute accented "I" then it's an easy explanation and an easy fix. Just replace 'i with ĩ.

The single ん/n sound at the end of a word when the next kanji begins with a vowel is commonly distinguished from the に/ni sound by using an apostrophe. Doceirias 02:58, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Eh I wouldn't go that far. Not every place puts the apostrophe, but I like it, because it avoids people from learning konnichiwa wrong, for example. Unknown Drama CD[edit]

As far as I can tell, it came from a promotional release via Shōnen Sunday last month, which is why it's not sold it stores. Anyway, the title is: Hayate no Gotoku! Hayate the Combat Butler Nekketsu Drama CD Gōgō Seitokai Tenkenjaa VS Kyōfu Donperi Kaijin Yukijin (ハヤテのごとく! Hayate the combat butler 熱血ドラマCD 轟轟生徒会タンケンジャー VS 恐怖のドンペリ怪人ユキジン). Anime Genre[edit]

I always considered HnG to be Seinen. Despite it being centered around younger teens, the oddball references to older anime/manga makes me feel its for an older demographic. Title, again[edit]

Since this just came up in a couple of recent edits -- the meaning of the title is really not ambiguous at all. There's this myth that Gotoku might mean Five Virtues, but it really doesn't; 如く is quite a common comparative word, and means "like" or "As if" -- although it frequently has a negative/scornful connotation in modern usage. 五徳 means Five Virtues, and is also read "gotoku" but it is a pretty rare word, and no one fluent in Japanese would confuse the two. The Hayate part of Hayate no Gotoku is the main character's name, however; I have no idea why someone was trying to translate that, or how they arrived at that conclusion. I don't think a translation should be applied because no translation available would make sense or capture the full meaning of the title. The lack of kanji don't impede accurate understanding any more than a hundred other titles where a common word is left in hiragana simply because the targeted age group probably can't read the kanji. While it may be a stub now, it still has room for improvement, and as a feature film, I think it should have its own article.
