Removed reference to Blockbuster Video only[edit]

The idea that this title was only released at Blockbuster Video is hearsay. Akin to Flintstones 2, there is no proof (and in fact, proof against) that this title was a rental exclusive. Also consider that Ren & Stimpy Fire Dogs and Final Fight Guy, rental only titles, were branded on the box that they were in fact rental exclusives while this title does not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.84.243.252 (talk) 22:08, 16 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Release date[edit]

No one can find an exact date of release for outside of Japan? I searched, but can't find a specific day.

Certain online sources say "Jun 1 1995" as American release. It could entirely be that they are based on Wiki's numbers, and default to 1 if there's no specific date? Double check these. For EU, the Spanish Nintendo Action mag was giving it a review in June 1995, not a preview, and it didn't refer to it as an import title. The EU release would be around then.

Interestingly, I can find next to nothing in Japanese online sources. Just a small famitsu listing covering the basics, and no review. The JP Wiki doesn't even have a page for this game! That suggests strongly that the game wasn't that popular in Japan. International game magazine coverage is much stronger. Nintendo Action of Spain devoted issue 31 to an in-depth review, and issue 35 had a strategy section. There's other Euro mags and American mags too. Did you check the other magazines sourced in the article? You are right about online websites following after wiki. Back then, it was common for games to not have specific release dates and more or less just kinda showed up "sometime this month". Also, there have been rumors for years that Hagane was a Blockbuster exclusive in North America, but no evidence has appeared to support this theory. TarkusAB^talk 03:58, 31 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I checked, and the earliest dated reference to the June 1995 date is a Oct 2007 post by Cinemassacre. The Sept wiki does not list a date other than 1994, so in this case we can be safe that the source is not wiki. And I can easily see "June 1995" being turned into "June 1st 1995". So June 95 might be the best we can do. The mags don't specify.

As for the Blockbuster rumors, I'm certain it's false. The American magazines would have mentioned it. What it looks like is that the game was not a huge hit in Japan, and then it was released so late in the lifespan for the SNES in America that it was given a short print run. Metal Warriors, also in 1995 only got 50,000 copies made. People then speculate Hagane must be rare because it was blockbuster only, when it's just more likely it got a short print run.

This games Radar piece on blockbuster exclusives doesn't list Hagane at all. And this 2005 page lists the game, but makes no mention of Blockbuster, but does list Final Fight Guy as from Blockbuster. (talk) 11:08, 31 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Super NES Games]

Found on Yoshi's Safari of all places, what looks like an official pdf by Nintendo listing all SNES games. It appears to be American release dates. It just says "June 1995". This link, if it is official as it appears, would be worth keeping around. If this is just the American date, then a source would be needed for EU too. But the implication of Nintendo Action's review is that the game was released in EU in or around June 1995 as well. Harizotoh9 (talk) 19:43, 31 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

German magazine Maniac mentions that it was published in "4 / 1995". Pretty sure that's the release date for the game, not the publication of the magazine it was reviewed in? I think it's the game's release date. Harizotoh9 (talk) 06:14, 23 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Title[edit]

I may be an idiot on this. The JP cover, instruction manual, JP Wiki, etc list it as "鋼 HAGANE". Of course "鋼" is "Hagane", so its not like anyone would read the title as "Hagane Hagane". But that is what it's listed as officially.

Press coverage:[edit]

I think the article should cover the amount of press the game got. It's considered an underground "cult classic" game, and most people didn't hear about it until the advent of the internet. Thus, the game getting some decent press coverage is interesting. I know it got the cover of Nintendo Accion. How much did NP and others cover it? Harizotoh9 (talk) 07:51, 3 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Well, that makes it getting front page in one mag even more interesting and notable. Also I stumbled upon Man!ac magazine's coverage of the game, including a review. It's in German though. Harizotoh9 (talk) 04:06, 17 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
