Isn't his portrayal - A substantial role - In Peter Shaffer's "Amadeus" worthy of inclusion in this article?

I wouldn't argue that his portrayal in Amadeus is "substantial", but I do agree that the portrayal in both stage and film should be noted. So, I added a popular media section today. If van Swieten is a character in any novels or other works, it should be noted in this section. Cheers! Spacini (talk) 19:07, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Braunbehrens[edit]

Owing to the flawed secondary literature that he relied on, Braunbehrens's book is so fraught with errors that it cannot be used as a source for van Swieten's biography.--Suessmayr (talk) 09:34, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Suessmayr, I'm sorry to be quarreling with you so often, but I think ad hominem comments like this one are not helpful. The problem as I see it is that you are just an anonymous Wikipedia editor--why should I or other editors give any particular credence to your remarks, when they are weighed against actually-published material?
It would be far more helpful in this context if you would cite a published source that give alternative estimates about Swieten's income. Or, if you really want to advocate the view "Braunbehrens is incompetent, therefore trust him for nothing", then you should be able to cite published material that makes a good case that he is indeed incompetent. Portrait by Fendi, engraved by Axmann, does not show Gottfried van Swieten.[edit]

The second portrait given here as one of Gottfried van Swieten is, in my opinion, that of his father, the famous physician Gerard van Swieten, empress Maria Theresia's personal medical attendant. --Yorick94.219.151.226 (talk) 12:11, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you -- very interesting. Here is what I was able to find out.
If you click on the image you've questioned, you'll find that it was taken from work by Daniel Heartz, a very experienced scholar. You'll also see that it was printed in a 1914 collection of Mozart's letters edited by Ludwig Schiedermair. If you are correct, we could suppose that it was Schiedermair who originally erred, and that Heartz copied his error without checking.
Further, if you visit the Gerard van Swieten page on the Wikimedia Commons([1]), there is a picture there, labeled as being Gerard, that looks extremely similar to the one under discussion ([2]). The Commons image was taken from a work by a military medical historian, who discussed Gerard van Swieten's views on amputation, etc.
On the basis of this little search, I believe that you are almost certainly right, and we ought to remove the image from this article. However, I propose to delay doing this for a couple of days in case other editors have any comments. Thanks again. Opus33 (talk) 16:57, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why bother delaying? Of course it's his father. http://www.bildarchivaustria.at/Bildarchiv//583/B7392403T7392407.jpg 128.232.152.31 (talk) 16:53, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks to the two of you -- I confess I have been too lazy to do the research myself ... Best, Yorick 94.219.151.226 (talk) 19:49, 15 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article on Gottfried van Swieten states that his father stayed Protestant all of his life, while in the article on Gerard van Swieten it is stated that Gerard remained Catholic. A serious contradiction, i noticed.[edit]
