Re: DC naming Batman's home patch Gotham - isn't it just intended to echo gothIC, and hence to sound like a dark place? Notreallydavid 01:39, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The name Gotham City comes from its being based on New York City. It's impossible that Bob Kane eliminated the adjectival -ic morpheme from gothic and replaced it with the meaningless element -am to create a name that just happens to be a sobriquet for the very city he was emulating. --Above... the BobKane argument is irrelevant here, as this article isn't about the fictional Gotham, but rather the real Gotham (not a city by any means.) 75.186.111.99 (talk) 01:22, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation[edit]

Is it possible that Gotham is also sometime pronounced as Gottam, which in American English would sound somewhat like "goddam"? Please forgive me my ignorance. My mother tongue is German.--80.141.245.213 (talk) 13:04, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't make sense. Even if it were pronounced like you described, it still wouldn't sound like God damn since the -am part is not stressed in Gottam. --82.207.237.82 (talk) 00:21, 22 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
