1. Yes, he did join the Jesuit order, but he was never ordained a priest. He later left the Order.

2. Yes, he did renounce the Catholic Church at one point, but he was reconciled to the Church in 1884 and died within her.

Japan visit[edit]

If its of value / interest, it could be noted that he was in Japan in April 1881, where he was at a party with the Mikado. He also spent time with famous Japan diplomat Ernest Satow.

Which was his regiment in India?[edit]

The 8th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry (Bombay Presidency, HIC Army) or the 8th King's Regiment (Regular Army)? My guess: the former ("https://www.jstor.org/stable/1801402?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents").
