Number of Species of Gerbera[edit]

According to the article there are "approximately 30 species in the wild" yet the list of species in the article has about 80 names.

Does this mean that new species are being bred "not in the wild"? Or that each genuine species has on average 80/30 = 2.6 names assigned to it?

Or?

Annual?[edit]

The article says Gerbera is a tender annual.

This website

http://www.plantzafrica.com/plantefg/gerberajames.htm

says Gerbera jamesonii is a perennial.

I realize some species may be perennial and others annual. Is more definitive information available?

Depends where you grow them. Tomatoes are annual in Britain, but further south they are perennial and grow into trees. 92.28.242.93 (talk) 16:45, 18 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, it has to do with the climate. In Calcutta or other parts of mainland India, far from the bitter cold of Himalayas or the extreme climate if Thar desert, it can be treated as a perennial; of course it needs to be ensured that the soil is not t soggy. It is a demanding plant and a heavy feeder. With regular anti fungal sprays, fertilizing with NPK and micronutrients it will blossom all year long. However in Calcutta the best blooms I noticed were from November to March. Summer heat results in faded shades and lesser blooms. But they'll bloom anyway.
