True wife of George Mason II?[edit]

In doing some genealogical research, I've come across a disparity. Books such as The Five George Masons (by Pamela Copeland) list Mary Fowke, daughter of Gerard Fowke and Ann Thorogood, as being married to George Mason II, making her the grandmother of the founding father, George Mason IV. However, in the book Charles County Gentry, (page 269, footnote) historian Harry Wright Newman states that Mary Fowke was actually married to William Newman. He believes that George Mason II married a different Mary Fowke, daughter of Chandler Fowke, not Gerard.

Is it possible that Pamela Copeland was incorrect in stating that Mary Fowke, child of Gerard & Ann, married Col George Mason? Or, could it be that the same Mary was married first to George Mason II and later to William Newman? Could Wright Newman be correct and earlier historians have the wrong Mary Fowke as grandmother to George Mason? I have not seen any death records for her, so perhaps she did not die but rather went on to marry William Newman. I do know George Mason II was married three times, but I've seen no evidence that he was widowed the first time, so perhaps he divorced Mary Fowke and she then married William Newman?

Perhaps there's no way to clear up this discrepancy, but I bring it to your attention hoping that someone can shed some light.[1] Lindalouwho54 (talk) 14:50, 7 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
