Knighthood and other odds and ends[edit]

I've deleted the statement at the end of the 'Popularising musical comedy section' that Edwardes was knighted, as he wasn't. More debatably I have removed the reference to Eliot Galer in the first para of 'Life and career', as it seems fairly tangential to the the main subject - but by all means reinstate it if you disagree. Other changes are typos etc. I think you've got the balance just right, with each aspect of G.E's enterprises given the proper detail. Tim riley (talk) 09:42, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Elliot (not Eliot) Galer had a connection to Meyer Lutz, the music director at the Gaiety. I don't have the facts, yet, but I suspect that Galer helped Edwardes get the job at the Gaiety. -- Ssilvers (talk) 14:11, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Biographical details[edit]

"youngest" for existing "eldest" - name of daughter - number and locations of stud farms: all need citations. If available, please add to the first two and reinstate the details of the third along with citation. Tim riley (talk) 07:21, 25 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have reverted the changes pending a citation, as I have had no response to a note on the editor's talk page. -- Ssilvers (talk) 13:27, 25 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox[edit]

Someone added an infobox to this article, and I have removed it. The Manual of Style says: "Whether to include an infobox ... is determined through discussion and consensus among the editors at each individual article." While sports and politician bios can benefit from infoboxes, most articles, as here, do not. Here are some reasons why I disagree with including an infobox in this article: (1) The box emphasizes unimportant factoids, and all the facts it presents are stripped of context and lacking nuance, whereas the WP:LEAD section emphasizes and contextualizes the most important facts. (2) The most important points about the article are discussed in the Lead, or adequately discussed in the body of the article, so the box is redundant. (3) It takes up valuable space at the top of the article and hampers the layout and impact of the Lead. (4) Frequent errors creep into infoboxes, as updates are made to the articles but not reflected in the redundant info in the box, and they tend to draw more vandalism and fancruft than other parts of articles. (5) The infobox template creates a lot of code near the top of the edit screen that discourages new editors from editing the article. (6) It discourages readers from reading the article. (7) It distracts editors from focusing on the content of the article. Instead of improving the article, they spend time working on this repetitive feature and its coding and formatting. See also WP:DISINFOBOX. -- Ssilvers (talk) 10:18, 16 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I agree: I'm not sure of the benefit on this particular article, given the information in the lead. - SchroCat (talk) 10:28, 16 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've had a look at the info-box on the relevant earlier version of the page. It is the sort of thing that makes Wikipedia look amateurish. The dates are inconsistent with the text, WP:OVERLINK is ignored, and, perhaps most importantly, the box tells the reader nothing about why Edwardes mattered. Nor should we expect an info-box to be able to do so for a theatre biography of this sort. The key information should be (and in this case is) summarised in the lead. Tim riley talk 10:42, 16 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No infobox required. As I have said elsewhere, I cannot see what an infobox adds to an article that is not already included in a well written lead. Duplicating the information at the top of the article is totally unnecessary. Jack1956 (talk) 19:11, 16 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
