Jim O'Neill[edit]

I removed the link for Burbank's predecessor, Jim O'Neil (or James Francis Patrick O'Neill). It redirected to the baseball player of the same name.

Mr. Synonymous[edit]

This was not the Senseless Survey guy, he was a Bengal player who "wished to remain synonymous so as not to besmirch [his] reparation"

The senseless survey character was Riley Girt from the US Senseless Bureau.

Riley Girt[edit]

Was not actually a character of Gary Burbank, but Kevin "Doc" Wolfe, one of Gary's associates. I found the following on the way back machine:

The Senseless Survey was started during the presidential primaries when Bill Clinton ran the first time, so that would have been what? 1992? I did these as writer/producer/sidekick on the Gary Burbank Show on WLW radio in Cincinnati, Ohio. They were later syndicated when the Burbank Show went national. There were approximately 450 Senseless Survey calls recorded over a 10 year period.

Riley Girt, the surveyor of this frivolity, caught on as a character and developed his own personality as an androgenous, middle-aged milquetoast who lived with his mother. Often mistaken for a woman, Riley took the insult in stride and moved on to ask the next ridiculous question.

These are all legitimate calls made at random to people kind enough to answer the questions. I often dialed 60 numbers in order to get two good calls. I guess I don't consider them "prank calls" in the traditional sense since no one was emotionally hurt, verbally abused or made the butt of the joke in the process. In a way, I think this shows what good-natured citizens America is blessed with.
