Changes in position[edit]

The link for the changes in position doesn't seem to work, but in the Spanish version, it has https://web.archive.org/web/20090613003314/http://edicionesanteriores.trabajadores.cu/proposiciones/cuba%20por%20dentro/jrb-fuente-india.htm which says "Posteriormente en 1863, por acuerdo del Ayuntamiento, se trasladó al Parque Central y en 1875 fue devuelta al sitio que ocupa ahora. En 1928, cuando ese campo se transformó en Plaza de la Fraternidad, se le volvió a dar la posición actual, o sea la inicial." - I don't follow what the moves in 1875 and 1928 involved. The picture circa 1900 here seems to be the current location but facing west instead of north. You are right. When reading about this statue I came across a source that says that the statue was moved back in 1875 (from Parque Central) to the current site. I also found this image (taken in 1895, source university of Delft, Nl.) showing the statue on its actual site, but looking at the Campo de Marte (due west,in the background one can see the hotel Saratoga). The upper part of the statue was turned 90 degrees in 1928 at the same time when this parque was inaugurated, but now overlooking the square in front of the Capitolio.

En 1875 el monumento fue ubicado nuevamente donde se aprecia en la actualidad pero la cara de la estatua se situó en dirección hacia el oeste. En 1928 al inaugurarse el Parque de la Fraternidad, la Fuente de la India fue dejada en ese sitio, aunque le cambiaron su orientación, ya que ahora mira en dirección norte. [1]

Of course, this building had nothing to do with 'Saratoga' at the time and was still owned by Gregorio Palacio y Peréz. Palacio died in 1904 and has a grave at cementerio Colon ever since: https://postimg.cc/YG0wSN0G RenaatPeeters (talk) 20:33, 22 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
