The Pyrenean Fritillary in Cultivation

This dark-flowered Pyrenean fritillary, which resembles the Fritillaria meleagris, is completely hardy and is known to be easily grown in normal garden soil. Unfortunately, bulbs of this species are only available from a few specialised bulb growers and this species is rarely cultivated. The bulbs must be very fresh, because they are, like those of the native fritillary, very sensitive to dehydration.

A few years ago I was able to obtain a few bulbs - outside the catalogue - from a specialised Dutch producer. A few specimens have adapted well and bloom again every year. They have in the meantime produced seeds, which I have sown in cold greenhouses. This year – the third year after sowing – a few plants are now producing stems, but will not bloom this year.
