Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on May 4, 2010.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that German politician Willy Brandt was the first recipient of the International Rescue Committee's Freedom Award in 1957?

Dubious information[edit]

The 2009 entry is sourced to, it turns out, an article published on Paquito D'Rivera's own WWW site, which claims to be a reprint of a piece in the Miami Herald. It states that the IRC's 75th Anniversary took place at the Freedom Tower in Miami, Florida on 2009-01-22. The IRC's own WWW site, however, states that the 75th Anniversary was held on 2008-11-12 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, where the 2008 award was presented to Kofi Annan. Additionally, the IRC's own WWW site lists no 2009 recipient of the Freedom Award. Uncle G (talk) 12:53, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • However, the Miami Herald archives seem to confirm he was honored then, see [1] "the IRC is marking its 75th anniversary with a fundraising event at Miami's Freedom Tower on Thursday. The gala will honor Grammy Award-winning jazz musician Paquito D'Rivera, who the IRC helped resettle in 1980,". Dougweller (talk) 13:50, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • Does it say whether he was awarded the Freedom Award? Uncle G (talk) 18:20, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
      • You have to buy the article, I'm afraid, but maybe not [2]. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dougweller (talkcontribs) 19:31, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
        • Well found! That seems to confirm that whatever D'Rivera was awarded, it wasn't at a Freedom Award dinner, and wasn't a Freedom Award. D'Rivera's own WWW site says that it was a "Champion of Freedom" award, whatever that is. Uncle G (talk) 05:14, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Given that the editor who contributed this information has a page of warnings, appears to be a WP:SPA and hasn't edited for three weeks since appearing for a less than a day, I removed the entry. The Rambling Man (talk)

Flagging incorrect listing for 2017 Freedom Award[edit]

Hello Wikipedians,

I am declaring my conflict of interest as a staff member of the International Rescue Committee (IRC), employed as an editor of its website, Rescue.org.

I wanted to flag incorrect information in this article: Leopoldo López is listed as the recipient of the 2017 International Rescue Committee Freedom Award. The Freedom Award was in fact awarded to Michael Bloomberg in 2017.
