License of image with Beatrix[edit]

Under what license is the image with the queen released? (Balkenende II image) It would make a good image to place on {{In the news}} once the cabinet is appointed. JACOPLANE • 2007-02-18 13:20

The big day![edit]

Today is the day of installation, this will involve minor re-writes on almost every article on Dutch politics. Would any one mind if I start with re-writing before the official installation (15h00)? Error[edit]

There appears to be an error in the last line of the first paragraph in the Formation section. It lists the Party for the Animals as one of the winners of the elections. Yet according to the page on the Dutch general election, 2006 they are tied for last place. How can a party be one of the winners if it is in last place? It would probably be more appropriate to list the Labour Party (PvdA) instead. ClixTrek 05:50, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is a characteristic of how the Dutch talk about election results. A party is deemed an election "winner" if it gains more seats than it held in the prior parliament, and a "loser" if it wins fewer seats than in the prior election. Therefore both CDA and PvdA were modest "losers" in the 2006 election as they both dropped a few seats, and PvdD was a winner by virtue of gaining their first-ever seats. This affects cabinet formations as well: traditionally coalitions almost always include at least one party which "won" the election. I think it's better to clarify that those parties "gained seats" as opposed to "win", which is obviously ambiguous (as the above incident shows), so I've gone ahead and done that. Doesn't really take away from the substance of the article. Kelvinc 10:19, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Strange Law[edit]

There's a strange law mentioned here, the one that says that noone may earn more than the prime minister. Is this really correct? Yes, that is correct. We call it the "Balkende norm" The rule is that nobody in a (semi)public office may earn more then the minister president. This also incl. schools, public TV, housingcoorperations etc etc. Every institute that receives money from the public.

It is not a law; it is an internal regulation for government and government dependent bodies. It was initiated after it turned out that e.g. some school directors (of state subisidised schools; which all schools are in the Netherlands) and other state paid/subsidised postions were earning much more than the prime minister. This created some unrest in society as it was argued that the person with the largest public responsibility (the prime minister) should be rewarded higher compared to other governmental staff....
