Fore meaning incoming golf ball

Some extra information[edit]

The OED claims that it is probably a contraction of "before". To me, this carries a certain amount of weight. Some of the offered explanations (in particular the rather obvious backronyms) seem strange.

It'd be good if anyone had a decent reference beyond OED, isn't this part of golf lore somehow?

The about article seeems okay, just going by that would allow us to trim a bit and focus on before as origin and how it came from there.

Yet another "Fore!" gag :)[edit]

(Which might probably get removed if I put that into the article ;)) There's a popular cartoon of former British satirical cartoon series "2DTV" where George W. Bush tries to play golf, exclaiming "THREE!" (Later he will use his portable red button kit, causing the whole Canadian territory to vaporise in a cloud of smoke, while uttering the phrase: "Who needs Canada anyway?!") -andy 77.191.206.83 (talk) 20:49, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
