Untitled[edit]

Tom Campagna, when he was Chief Engineer under Claire Schulmann, had promised to rewiden the Flushing River to its original width because the reduced flow was largely responsible for the stink of Flushing Bay.

Prior to that Cristian Mayer from Colombia University had proposed a grant grubbing boondoggle putting canal locks in Flushing Bay.

The River was widened for the first World fair but buried for the second. Burial of the river and subsidiary creeks is responsible for much local flooding. Aerial thermal imaging should be used to map them as the land has shifted from that in maps at NYPL.

There are paintings of the river once dislayed at IBM Galleries in the mid 1980s.

The Bronx River is narrower, why don't they call that a Creek? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.111.120.99 (talk) 15:13, 3 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question about dating of Brooklyn Ash Removal Company[edit]

Article indicates that Brooklyn Ash Removal Company was given land on banks of Flushing Creek in mid-19th century, but I'm noting several sources where this company was not mentioned before the 1900's, 1904 appearing to be a target date. Harder to check from Los Angeles... could someone definitively verify? LiteratPJ (talk) 21:51, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Comments

  • Lead feels a little short for the article...
    • Expanded.
  • "where Vleigh Place traces the Vleigh (old Dutch for Valley) of the headwaters" I don't really understand this?
    • It was supposed to mean that "Vleigh" is the old Dutch word for "valley". Fixed now. epicgenius (talk) 15:34, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • "headwaters" is used three times in three consecutive sentences, it's a bit repetitive.
    • Fixed.
  • "Bay.[13][4] " order
    • Fixed.
  • "eastern bank[9][13] " I would just put these at the end of the sentence.
    • Done.
  • "during rains" maybe a USEng thing, rains looks/reads odd to me.
    • Yeah, I think that can be chalked up to dialectal differences. epicgenius (talk) 15:34, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • "The raw sewage collected in the Flushing River contributed " why is this past tense?
  • "164 Ml" I think "million liters" would be better as not many would recognise Megaliter...
    • Fixed.
  • "The southern branch originated" as you're discussing this in past tense, I would move the "has been infilled" into this first mention, like "The southern branch, which has been infilled, originated..."?
    • Done.
  • "Long Island Expressway" overlinked.
    • Fixed.
  • Interstate 495 in parentheses is overlinked and I would expect this to be after the first instance of Long Island Expressway, not the third.
    • Done.
  • "Looking south " caption is a sentence, needs a period.
    • Done.
  • "waters.[42][4]" order.
    • Fixed.
  • What's a " trunnion"?
    • I linked it to Bascule bridge#Types. A fixed trunnion bridge has two leaves that rotates around a large axle that raises the span(s). epicgenius (talk) 15:34, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • "the Flushing River.[52][14] " order.
    • Fixed.
  • bascule bridge is overlinked.
    • Fixed.
  • "Whitestone Expressway (I-678)" I think you should be consistent with this formatting, Interstate 678 (as before) or change Interstate 495 to I-495. I prefer the former as to me, a non-expert, I-678 isn't necessarily something I understand.
    • Removed.
  • "tidal marsh" is overlinked.
    • Removed.
  • "of Flushing Bay.[56][10]" order.
  • "phragmites" our article is italics.
  • "Corona Park.[56][10]" order.
  • "the lakes.[10][4][5][60]" order.
  • " of Willow plants" no need for capital W.
    • Done all.
  • " the 1964 Fair," since you're not referring to it by its formal title, do you really need to capitalise Fair?
    • Fixed.
  • "is part of the Willow Lake Preserve" the same as the preserve in the previous sentence? Name it first time round?
    • Done.
  • waterfowl is overlinked.
    • Removed.
  • "Flushing Creek.[101][83][102] " order, but are three refs needed for a single sentence?
    • I just removed ref 83, and other duplicate refs. epicgenius (talk) 15:34, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • "considered "all but worthless"" according to whom?
    • Added attribution.
  • Several sentences in this para with lots of citations, are they are really needed (see WP:CITEKILL)?
  • "in The Great Gatsby.[112][83][113]" order, but previous comment applies.
    • See above.
  • Jamaica Yard is overlinked (second time is "Jamaica subway yard")
  • Roosevelt Avenue is overlinked.
  • Other overlinks: Long Island Rail Road, Flushing, Flushing River Park, 1964 New York Worlds Fair, Van Wyck Expressway, Willets Point, Kissena Park, Kissena Corridor Park, Kissena Creek.
  • Ref 80 spaced hyphen should be en-dash.
  • Avoid SHOUTING in ref titles and Source titles.
  • Ref 87 needs to be pp. for page range, check others.

That's my lot for this one. On hold. Cheers. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 14:52, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Happy with the modifications. I removed a couple more overlinks, but now promoting. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 18:33, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Indeed promoted to GA two days ago. I personally lean toward the default or to ALT1; ALT2 sounds impressive, but the phrase "fixed-trunnion bascule bridge" is perhaps too specialist. Human impact on something "worthless" that we now understand to be critical to the environment is a more universal concept. -- Zanimum (talk) 01:02, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
