crime and punishment[edit]

what does 1000 crimes /500 crimes or 300 crimes stand for? how is anyone to "achieve" 1000 crimes? why is the punishment for 300 crimes worse than for 1000? ...needs explanation ~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.60.212.96 (talk) 23:19, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Its been over a year since you asked, and I'm wondering the same thing. They actually seem to be in reverse order. Since it makes no sense and no one's provided an explanation, i'm just going to remove the numbers all together. 74.132.252.16 (talk) 18:47, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I checked the citation because I don't understand how at 1000 crimes you can get a tattoo when they supposedly kill you at 200. The problem is that the description is horribly misleading. What the source says is that for instance the "kinds of crimes to which tattooing is applicable amount to 1000," eg what I take is that there are 1,000 different offenses (slander, robbery, laviciousness, etc) to which it is regarded as the appropriate punishment. This also makes sense because then there are FEWER types of crimes that, say, death is applicable for. 138.51.121.238 (talk) 18:17, 25 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

They said he might have died because of mercury pills, not this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.163.199.212 (talk) 17:39, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Section title capitalization[edit]

Not sure how they should be as they begin with "The...", but they are inconsistent. eg. "The Five Punishments for Serfs" and "The Five Punishments for female offenders". Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:57, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

More importantly, "punishment for slaves" and "punishments for serfs" are direct translations from Marxist Chinese literature, which imposes the categories "slave society" and "feudal society" to different eras of Chinese history. The labels have very little support in scholarly literature on the subject.--218.1.116.99 (talk) 04:55, 4 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Come on[edit]

This is just fucking savage... Why do people give the Chinese credit for being "civilized" before everyone else? -xwingsx- (talk) 22:25, 14 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Typically, extreme punishments ARE closely associated with civilization, rather than "primitive tribes" cultures.Arildnordby (talk) 12:24, 5 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Are you saying that running electric current through someone's body until they're dead isn't civilized???? 138.51.121.238 (talk) 18:19, 25 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Remittance Payments[edit]

Its a good idea to have a comparison for the remittance payments with a labourers average wage but it would be better if the average wage were denominated consistently somehow as its not at all clear how guan and wen relate to each other.212.159.44.170 (talk) 21:59, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
