To put it mildly! All the various sorts of finales need their own pages, if they don't have them already (which most don't). And just check "What links here[1]" - zillions of articles link to this dab page. --GuillaumeTell (talk) 01:44, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Definitions[edit]

The page currently features three definitions, with links to pages that do not mention the term finale: Classical music, Opera, and Musical theatre. Since the term is not discussed on those pages, the three points should probably be removed. The only reason that I hesitate to do so is that there were six pages describing pieces of music or theater that linked to this page. I removed the internal links from those six pages, as I know of nowhere better for them to link to. (I will no doubt be pilloried for this; I welcome others to find a better solution.)

Should those links simply be removed? Should a definition be included here? MOS:DAB suggests 'yes' to the former and 'no' to the latter. Can anyone suggest a better solution? Cnilep (talk) 02:35, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

User:Kleinzach has added a definition to the lead section (see also Kleinzach's comments at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Classical music); another editor recommends linking to Wiktionary (Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Musical Theatre) and two others recommend creating a new page on finales in music (Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Disambiguation and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Opera).

I had recommended creating an article at Finale (music). I think that is the appropriate resolution to all links for an article relating to a "finale" in any kind of music. Basically, the thing to cover in such an article would be the different ways in which a piece of music is typically brought to an end, and perhaps how this has developed over time. bd2412 T 23:32, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think that what is needed is two fairly substantial articles entitled something like:

[[Finale (stage works)]], and
[[Finale (non-vocal classical music)]] (or some other such distinguishing title)

It seems to me that opera/operetta/musical theatre finales differ fairly considerably from symphony/concerto/chamber music finales, and so trying to bung all of these into one article is likely to cause confusion.

You're right, I was thinking only of the finale as the flourish signaling the end of a piece of music, and not the finale as the last piece or last song of a production containing multiple pieces. bd2412 T 01:01, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
