Please note that these engines are not an evolution of the Fiat DOHC Lampredi engine. They are a completely new engine family designed from scratch by Alfa Romeo to replace both the ageing Lampredi DOHC and the expensive to manufacture Alfa DOHC engines. The 1.4 12V is not a member of this engine family, but a develolment of the small FIRE engine. The "Modulare" was available as a fuel engine with four or five cylinders and as a Diesel with four, five or six cylinders, the latter being used in IVECO light commecial vehicles like the Daily. The fuel engines were DOHC only, with or without variable cam timing, variable inlet tract and Twin Spark double spark plug ignition (Alfa only) and indirect or direct injection. The Diesels were available in SOHC form (all versions) and in DOHC form (four and five cylinders only).

The great flexiblity of the concept made room for a bewildering number of versions of these engines. The 1.8 for example spanned a range from 90 HP (single plug ignition, no variability of anything, used in the Fiat Brava/Bravo for some export markets) to 144 HP (twin spark, variable cam and inlet tract, used in various Alfas exclusively) with 113 HP (nothing variable), and 130 HP (variable cam and inlet, but single ignition) in between.
