RfC: African-American in header[edit]

Should descriptor African American be used in the lead/article or not?

"African-American" has been repeatedly edited out of the header by an IP editor, claiming at first in the edit summary that it refers only to Americans who were born in Africa, which is manifestly not true.

This article has information indicating her ethnicity is significant, e.g. her founding "Black Americans for Family Values" and many of her quotes. The fact that she is an African-American conservative activist also makes her notable. As far as I know, there's no debate on Wikipedia over including "African-American" in articles about African-Americans. See e.g. Barack Obama. Is there a style guide on this? Include Since Ms. Foster uses the term black for herself, perhaps that is the one the article should use, just as we use the subject's preferred pronouns in articles about transgendered people. That may be what the IP editor is getting at with his/her reverts. But I certainly agree that her race is relevant to the article, forms a large portion of her notability and should be mentioned in the lead.--Gimme danger (talk) 16:15, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

wp:mosbio is the style guide for biogs. "Ethnicity should generally not be emphasized in the opening unless it is relevant to the subject's notability." My own view is that splitting-up humans into different ethnic groups is logically challenging. Kind regards Tom (talk) 13:37, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Include I would say, as "African Americans or Black Americans are citizens or residents of the United States who have origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa." and that Foster makes comments about black Americans originating in Africa, and her ethicity is African American, and that as she is the leader or senior administrator of a race-related political group, it is relevant and should be included.
