The Godfather[edit]

The article on the film states that Coppola came close to casting Borgnine, who was favored by the studio, instead of Brando. I think this is fairly significant and (unless I missed it?) should be mentioned in the acting section. Tulliux (talk) 15:28, 27 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Health Considering Age[edit]

If you would read the article you would see that this is mentioned. IMO it does have notability problems as it does not seem to have gained any traction with the media beyond the LAT article. There was no evidence that anyone at the ceremony had any problems with it - this is in contrast to what happened at the Academy Awards in 1999 with Elia Kazan. I read the source material, but I shouldn't have to. No where in the article are his political or social opinions mentioned as being controversial. Ernest Borgnine
American actor Ernest Borgnine, when he was made an honorary chief petty officer of the United States Navy in October 2004. After being discharged from the navy after World War II and having no direction in his life, Borgnine began his acting career on the advice of his mother, who thought his personality was well-suited for the stage. This began a six-decade period mostly as a character actor on stage, film, and television. Is the last sentence about Borgnine's whispered comment/joke relevant? It seems more like a snickering gotcha submitted by a high school sophomore. Wikipedia is not, by its own admission, an encyclopedia of every little thing a person has done or said, but the relevant things someone has done. Missing from Borgnine's film credits...GATTACA[edit]

The 1997 sci fi film GATTACA featured Borgnine in a small (but very memorable role) as a head janitor (and the main character's boss) who is ironically named "Caesar". Borgnine, along with the film's lead character, had been relegated to this low job because his DNA profile is considered "substandard" in that near future world where people are not allowed to advance unless their DNA looks good. The content so far is okay but its obviously clear that no mention was made of Ernest's acting role in the 1980s TV series "Battlestar Galactica". How is it that the contributors of this published content forgot to mention that Ernest acted alongside Dirk Benedict and others in BSG? Wasn't he the "Fleet Communications Officer"? I know I remember seeing him appear in the series, but I can't understand why his name didn't appear in the cast (see http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076984/fullcredits). Alternate title for Emperor of the North Pole[edit]

After its initial release this film had second one that was titled Shack which was Borgnine's character. I can remember the ads featuring some of his most brutal scenes. I can't seem to find any info about this on the net. I know that some of you are aces at research so I thought leave this note for any of you who might be able to find a reliable source about this so that we can add it too the article for the film and to the notes section of his filmography. Personal Life (again)[edit]

The previous derogatory item was removed, properly. Yet a new one is added - the story (footnote 14) of Borgnine's conversation with Ethel Merman, which is basically an insult to both of them and comes from an uncredited website that amounts to unprovable gossip. Remember, wikipedia is not a list of everything a person may or may not have done or said, but relevant information which can be credited to a reputable source. Pronunc.[edit]

Is there really a diphthong or glide or [o:] in Borgnine? wouldn't an open [O:] (as in the Borg, or boredom, or shore) be more English? Naval Service[edit]

Not sure how to expand on his "support"; based solely on personal experience.

Some years back, on a Valentine's Day, ran into Mr. Borgnine at the VA hospital in Washington, D.C., as he was exiting an elevator. He smiled, gave me a hearty "Hello!," and shook my hand. Possible ways to describe Borgnine's last role:

  1. "In late 2011, Borgnine completed what would be his last film, playing Rex Page in The Man Who Shook the Hand of Vicente Fernandez.
  2. In late 2011, Borgnine completed what would be his last film, playing the title role in The Man Who Shook the Hand of Vicente Fernandez.
  3. In late 2011, Borgnine completed what would be his last film, playing Rex Page in the title role of The Man Who Shook the Hand of Vicente Fernandez.
  4. Other.

First one is the current one. User:MarnetteD likes it that way, I prefer #2. (#3 is a possible compromise I suppose). I prefer #2 because "Rex Page" doesn't tell the reader much. Rex Page could be the lead, second lead, minor character, or whatever. (This is assuming you haven't seen the movie, which few have I guess.) This character could be named Rex Page, Joe Shmoe, or anything else -- it's not important. "Title role" tells the reader that he probably played an important role (he did, altho I'm not sure it was the lead so I can't say that). (The question of whether a film that doesn't have an actual personal name as the title can have a title could bear on this. Was Jackie Coogan the title role in "The Kid"? Sidney Poitier in "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner"? Gene Wilder in "The Man With One Red Shoe"? In my opinion, yes.) Herostratus (talk) 02:48, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I never said that I "like it that way" which you would understand if you had actually read my edit summaries. The second one which you "like" is confusing since his characters name is not in the title but another characters is. The third one is preferable and should hopefully prevent readers from thinking that EB played VF. Honorary CPO[edit]

In 2004, Borgnine received the honorary rank of Chief Petty Officer from the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Terry D. Scott - the U.S. Navy's highest ranking enlisted sailor at the time - for Borgnine's support of the Navy and Navy families worldwide.

Chief Petty officer[edit]

HE was promoted to Chief petty Officer by MCPON of the navy. for 12 years his friends called him Chief you dishonor his memory by demoting him to first class.
