Family name[edit]

Perhaps someone who knows Norwegian naming customs can say better, but it really looks like it's "Boasson Hagen" and not "Hagen." For one, "Boasson Hagen" was all they ever called him during the Giro d'Italia, and additionally:

and perhaps most tellingly

Norwegian naming custom is difficult because there is no consistency. Norwegians can have as many last names as they feel apropriate. But the most common is to have one from your mother, and one from your father. But it is different from Spanish naming custom, since the order of the last names are irrelevant. Since he still lives at home, I could from the Norwegian yellow pages find that his mother's name seems to be Signe Boasson. This means that Hagen derives from his father. But Hagen is such a common last name in Norway, currently ranking 16th. I myself have two last names; one from my mother, and one from my father. But in my passport, my mother's last name is located right after my given name, and my father's last name is located alone in the last name section. Don't know if this is the case with Boasson Hagen, but I have my suspicion that his use of both last names is because of the media. Imagine a news bulletin; "Hagen wins gold", it could then be 14,293 different people they're talking about. Since there seems to be only one named Boasson Hagen, it removes all the doubts. You get a clearer picture? lil2mas (talk) 13:00, 23 August 2009 (UTC) I do think the sorting should go after the last "last name", so it should be Hagen, Edvald Boasson in the sort parameters. But in the article; Boasson Hagen should be used.[reply]
Interesting. You're probably right about the media thing. Nosleep break my slumber 15:25, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Edvald himself to Cycle Sport (May 2009, p.114): "In my passport it says Hagen as a surname, and Edvald Boasson as first names. Boasson is a kind of middle name. But I prefer to use both as a surname". --Pirker (talk) 17:51, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That is verified by this listing in the Norwegian tax records. However we should follow the norm set by the media and use Boasson Hagen in the prose. I have no opinion about the sortkey. Rettetast (talk) 21:32, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
