Comment – Whenever I heard the nickname used, it was always as "Ed 'Too Tall' Jones", so, IMO, if it's to be moved to without a title without a disambiguator, it should be as "Ed 'Too Tall' Jones". It does not at all violate our rules; see many, many musicians, wrestlers, movie stars, etc. And it's ironic that someone said his name is "Ed Jones" when it's probably neither his birth name nor the name he's best known by.   • Move to Ed 'Too Tall' Jones, a redirect that's been around since January 2006‎, or Ed "Too Tall" Jones (September 2006‎; the article lead uses double quotes) which gives natural disambiguation. I agree that TV commentators calling the games he played in often gave his name this way. And then they would use "Ed" and "Too Tall" interchangeably.   • Support: Possibly, names like Ed "Too Tall" Jones may violate the WP:NICKNAME guidance to "avoid (for example) adding a nickname, or a contracted version of the original first name(s) in quotes between first and last name. For example: Bill Clinton, not William "Bill" Clinton." I am not 100% sure about that, after the recent discussion at Talk:Lee "Scratch" Perry#Requested move. Yes, but there are some people who are often referred to by a full such string (that includes a quoted nickname) for which we don't consider the full string appropriate (Sammy Gravano, Stephen Flemmi, Whitey Bulger, James McLean (mobster), Clem Grogan, Donald Shea, Lynette Fromme, Tex Watson). —BarrelProof (talk) 19:55, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
People say "That man over there is James Joseph Whitey Bulger"? People say "That woman is Lynette Squeaky Fromme"? I'm pointing out that people use the first name and the nickname together in the case of Ed-Too-Tall-Jones (he is not usually referred to as "Ed Jones" and he is not referred to as "Too Tall Jones" as often as he is referred to as "Ed Too Tall Jones"); the nickname may be more well-known than the legal name in your examples, but I have never heard the full string used to refer to them regularly. Well, they might say "Hey, look, there's Sammy The Bull Gravano" or "Gee – isn't that Steve The Rifleman Flemmi?". I don't think I've ever seen "The Bull" or "The Rifleman" except in quotes in the middle of the rest of their names. But I think I get your point. That one looks like a pretty bad example, since "Ted" is a pretty common nickname for people named Edward, so it comes pretty close to saying "William 'Bill' Clinton". Personally, I think that one has a bad title. Too Tall Jones is used by more than one hundred articles, but that includes huge results of Ed "Too Tall" Jones. Per WP:TITLEFORMAT policy, "An exception is made when the quotation marks are part of a name or title[.]" Per WP:NATURAL, "If it exists, choose an alternative name that the subject is also commonly called in English reliable sources, albeit not as commonly as the preferred-but-ambiguous title. Do not, however, use obscure or made-up names." The alternative proposal is neither obscure nor made-up. The WP:AT policy can contradict what WP:NICKNAME guideline says: "Notable distinctions can be explained in the article, but avoid (for example) adding a nickname, or a contracted version of the original first name(s) in quotes between first and last name."
