Kirward Derby[edit]

I apologize for changing this to "Kerwood," which was how I remembered it, after someone else apparently already had attended to the spelling. I have since watched one of the cartoons on YouTube and the voice actors are clearly pronouncing the second R, so I was wrong, although the cartoon I saw did not show the name in any onscreen titles, which may have been what I remembered. If "Kirward" is correct, however, then it is incorrect to say that the spoonerism was based on a mispronunciation, so I took that part out when reverting the spelling. Richard K. Concerning that Rocky & Bullwinkle serial, the article states that Kirby was convinced not to pursue legal action, but in that case, why was it not seen for many years (it did turn up on Nickelodeon, c. 1990), and why have several sources attributed that situation to a suit, or at least a threat of one, from Kirby? the story's told..that when CBS/etc threatened to sue.. Jay Ward was believed to reply, 'Please do, i need the publicity!!' And it was seen..i recall seeing/hearing it many times in the 1960's, had me rolling on the floor w/ laughter, i knew actually who they were refering to; that is, who had inspired the re-name. User Ted Watson, youre somewhat correct re: its disappearance for many years..seems during the Family-oriented 80's alot of these cartoons were deemed (by a panel of experts) psychologically damageing in that they were unrealistic to true reality. Simply put..characters being blown up and not dying. That, yes also included a whole catalog of WB BBunny, DDuck, RRunner/WCoyote (Super-Genuis), etc, etc cartoons that just poof no longer existed. It was decided kids needed reality. Why "Durward?"[edit]

If a reliable source could be found for the reason he was given such an unusual name (from relative or neighbor, from a place, from a fictional character such as "Quentin Durward" by Walter Scott, for instance) ) it would improve the article. Edison (talk) 05:21, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Birth date[edit]

I have no idea when this person was born. IMBD (not a reliable source for this kind of information -- they're sloppy) has him as August 24, 1912. Find-a-grave (also not a reliable source for this kind of information -- also sloppy) has him at August 24, 1911.

There there are a bunch of sites that have him at one of these two dates, split about evenly. I'm confident that all of these sites are just copying the date from some other source (whether IMBD, Find-a-grave, or other sites) without actually researching it. Then of course there's the mirrors of our own article.

However, Find-a-grave has a picture of his gravestone. It looks like a legit pic and there's no reason to assume it's not. And August 24, 1911 is chiseled into the granite. That could certainly be wrong. Families do get these things wrong. But I think that's the closest thing was have to a reliable source, so let's go with that until we can get hold of a birth certificate or obituary in a reliable paper or something. OK, also this has what it claims to be his obit from AP. I don't know if it really is his AP obit, but probably is. AP is a reliable source I guess. It doesn't give a birth date but says he was 88 at death, which would give him a 1911 birth (assuming he was born August 24, which all sources say he was). World War II[edit]

Kirby did not spend the entire war period in the navy. There is at least one recording (Nov. 3, 1943) of Kirby announcing the news on the CBS Daytime Radio Newspaper with Bernadine Flynn, which was sponsored by Crisco. I'm not sure if there are other broadcasts that were saved, but it sounds like Durward Kirby and he is named Durward Kirby. Jtyroler (talk) 02:19, 10 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
