Rewrite[edit]

So I've now put through my rather extensive rewrite of this article. It's not quite the realisation of what I set out to do and is far from perfect but I think I've managed to retain everything in the old incarnation and expand/add a lot of new and relevant content. Please attack/refine it as needed. Veila 08:04, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any chance we could have a picture if there is a free one around? Personally I would like http://www.toffeeweb.com/images/PLAYERS/Ferguson&Freund.jpg with the caption, "Ferguson also gained a reputation for being overly aggressive", but any would do.

Accuracy[edit]

I had a very hard time finding corroborating sources for Ferguson's statistics. Indeed, I'm certain there are errors in there, I'm just unable to find the One True Source for this data. Anybody with reliable data for appearances/goals please verify/fix the English table and the Scottish table I've commented out for the time being as it's not even complete, let alone accurate. Veila 08:04, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've made an effort on the tables using your Soccerbase ref - however, the ref cites 1 match, 0 goals in the "other" category for his Rangers years, which is impossible to figure out if it's the Challenge Cup or a European competition of some kind. Poulsen 12:50, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Fantastic, I couldn't stand trawling through it anymore! I'm not very familiar with the Challenge Cup myself, but I'm starting to think that Ferguson has never played for a team that was eligible to enter. I think only teams beneath the Scottish top–flight can enter. If this is correct then the appearance must have been European and we can remove the Challenge Cup column altogether. Veila 00:07, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, yeah, just remembered Rangers won a league title or two those years, probably a European match then. Poulsen 00:43, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Improvements[edit]

I would like to still add information about Ferguson's international career and his constant rebuffs in that regard. Also, his keeping of pigeons shows an interesting contrast to his on-field persona and would make a worthwhile topic. Beyond that, anybody who has a copy of Ferguson's A Blue by Blue Account could add some real weight to the article by referencing and improving/correcting statements I have made. Veila 08:04, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Carse Thistle to Dundee Transfer[edit]

I've modified the end date for Carse Thistle and the start date for Dundee according to the information given at Glenrothes Arabs, a rather comprehensive fan site. If somebody can find a secondary source for this information then it would be useful. As it stands, the dates for Ferguson's transfers are a little skewed between different sources I've encountered. Veila 00:35, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's not Dundee - it's Dundee United. Dundee refers to their rivals. --Revolt 20:14, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Duncan Ferguson is the hardest player ever to grace the field of play. He is renowned for his immense aerial power. He is undoubtedly a colossal aerial threat and heading the ball is prominent in his style of play, he has registered an abundance of goals by utilizing this technique. Additionally Ferguson’s headers also create numerous opportunities for his team mates. Ferguson grew up and became a commander in the Everton army, a group of thugs who support Everton. He started off with fifty men, which later grew well into the thousands. Fighting for the glory of Everton, Ferguson’s methods were insanely brutal and ruthless.

Tone[edit]

I put a tone tag on the article, it seems very conversational. For example, "When not blighted by these mishaps, his strength and stature made him a potent target–man" is not cited or anything - who said that? Blight doesn't seem encyclopedic. Look how many citation needed tags there are, mostly because they're broad statements - he's a tough defender, he has attracted the ire of referees, he's not a good goal scorer, etc etc. "These events precluded Ferguson from developing a potentially fruitful understanding with Andrei Kanchelskis." is another example. It's more like a fan page or opinion piece than an encyclopedia article. --Awiseman 21:30, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There's no doubt that the article requires significantly better referencing. How, though, does that define the tone of the piece? Every other criticism you have, bar the Kanchelskis critique (which resolves to another referencing issue, again unrelated to tone) stems from the article's introduction, which is a nutshell representation of the subject's noteworthy achievements and, as such, can be expected to have a different and more succinct and inviting tone than the bulk of the article. That doesn't excuse the lack of referencing in that section, but it hardly demands an attack on tone. As for your argument about "blight", I wouldn't even know how to approach such a ludicrous criticism, bar with contempt. veila# 04:07, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Just saw this. Please relax. "When not blighted by these mishaps" and things like "Unfortunately," are positive towards him. The others are, like I said, broad or overly positive or chatty. I realize American and English sports journalism are different, which is maybe why, but I am going to attempt to tone it down. --AW 21:09, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I removed a few citiation neededs, some are unncessary --AW 21:16, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What honor did he get?[edit]

Duncan Ferguson (Scottish football player)Duncan Ferguson — This article should be returned to Duncan Ferguson as the only other person of the same name on Wikipedia (Duncan Ferguson (political activist)) seems to be far less notable, indeed their notability is currently in question according to a tag on the page. — Dancarney (talk) 11:48, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protected edit request 14 December 2019[edit]

In the lead, please change "He was capped for Scotland seven times but made himself unavailable for selection for the national team" to "He was capped for Scotland seven times but subsequently made himself unavailable for selection for the national team". As it stands it seems contradictory. 2001:BB6:4713:4858:95E8:6640:5936:226E (talk) 14:16, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
