Taxonomy: For all marine species, Project Gastropods uses the taxonomy in the online database WoRMS. When starting a new article, do not use sources of taxonomic information that predate the 2017 revision for all gastropod groups ("Revised Classification, Nomenclator and Typification of Gastropod and Monoplacophoran Families" by Philippe Bouchet & Jean-Pierre Rocroi, Bernhard Hausdorf, Andrzej Kaim, Yasunori Kano, Alexander Nützel, Pavel Parkhaev, Michael Schrödl and Ellen E. Strong in Malacologia, 2017, 61(1–2): 1–526.) (can be dowloaded at Researchgate.net), substituting the previous classification of 2005 Taxonomy of the Gastropoda (Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005). Dyeing[edit]

Currently there is no source on the claim that dyes could be made from this animal, as the first link (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dog_whelk&oldid=896443984#cite_note-6) has expired, and the only remaining source (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dog_whelk&oldid=896443984#cite_note-8) is either misquoted, or the translation has changed to no longer refer to this species.

In the linked text, Bede says "There is also a great abundance of cockles, of which the scarlet dye is made..." not "Whelks are abundant, and a beautiful scarlet dye is extracted from them...". Cockles are not the same as whelks, though it might be a case of translation ambiguity, in which case this article should at least link to a source where the creatures are referred to as "whelks". Maybe there should be an addition about TBT and it's effects on the Dog Whelk.

Sections[edit]

Since "Distribution" and "Habitat" can be synonymous, shouldn't they be merged? At least to create more flow within the article - right now it's rather odd-looking with two two-sentence sections in a row. 12.12.33.153 (talk) 02:07, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
