Brutal rape?[edit]

Maya's rape is disgusting and cruel, but "brutal"? The rape in Irreversible is "brutal", but the rape in Descent isn't "brutal". This isn't to undermine the horrific nature of rape, but he never hits her once, he doesn't yell at her, he doesn't tear at her clothing. Perhaps any attempt to "grade" rape is foolish, and I do not - in any way - mean to undermine the horror of rape, but Jared isn't brutal in raping her. This point is important because it is Jared's sweet words and fawning affection that is the biggest sting to Maya later. If Jared had been brutish and cruel, Maya perhaps could have recovered from that. She blames herself for listening and being swayed by his wooing machinations. When he rapes her, he does so kissing her and touching her face. His words that once had been so sweet, are spoken with the same tenderness, but now they are racist and demeaning. This is the source of her pain, the fact that - though she is very intelligent and wise - she allowed him to manipulate her pride and desire to be wanted to get her exactly where he wanted her. If he had been brutal, she wouldn't be punishing herself so much for being taken in by his lies. She is so wounded because she was completely taken in by him, kissing and touching in bed before the rape occurs. Jared most definitely rapes her, there is no doubt about that, but to call the rape "brutal" simply isn't accurate. I have made a change to the page, removing the word "brutal" from the description. I totally agree. Rape is horrible, but the scene does not depict a "brutal" rape. Cjcaesar (talk) 03:57, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
