Height and Weight[edit]

As measured at the NFL Scouting Combine, DeSean is 5-10 (actually 9 3/4), 169, not 6-0, 178. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.133.183.82 (talk) 10:15, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No actually your facts are wrong he is 6-0 178 here is the link to prove it http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/desean-jackson?id=1581  Taylor21  22:29, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, the WEBSITE of the Combine probably simply neglected to update its (pre-measurement) reported height and weight figures after the fact. The following sites report the actual measurements from the Combine, and they support my claim. http://209.85.173.104/search?q=cache:wFamPSc_HbUJ:www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/profile.php%3Fpyid%3D57210+nfl+scouting+combine+desean+jackson&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us http://draftheadquarters.com/blog/?p=43 http://walterfootball.com/combine2008WR.php Also, if you the video footage from the combine, the on-screen graphics displayed his height as 5-9 3/4, and weight as 169. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.133.183.82 (talk) 08:30, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Finished degree?[edit]

He is awesome! . He spent 3 years in college and its "unclear" whether he finished his degree? Far be it from me to denigrate an athlete's mental capabilities, but considering it takes the non-athletic types, generally speaking, 4 years to finish a college degree, without the added responsibilities of being a member of a sports team, and the added pressure, recognition, fame of being a successful athlete, it seems more than a little naive to keep the issue open-ended as such. It is prudent to safely assume, especially considering that the semester isn't even over yet so it's more like 2.5 years of college for him, that until he verbally indicates otherwise, that he did not complete his degree. Hence, I'm not exactly sure what is unclear to the author. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.95.62.232 (talk) 02:15, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can't just assume he didn't graduate in 3 years. For example, I know that Peyton Manning did exactly that (but came back to play out his 4th year of eligibility anyway). You'd need to cite some source saying that he didn't finish his degree. We can't "assume" things that seem likely in our articles. 75.76.213.106 (talk) 03:52, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In 2008 season, I find this (coming after he'd lost what would have been his 1st NFL touchdown on Sept. 15 when he flicked the ball away too soon, at the one-yard line):

"On September 28, Jackson recorded his first offensive touchdown against the Chicago Bears."

Obviously, this would have been his 1st offensive touchdown **in the NFL**. But could someone reword to make it clear when he scored his 1st NFL touchdown (doesn't matter whether it was on offense or defense). If that Sept. 28 touchdown was his 1st NFL TD, could say something like "On September 28, Jackson recorded his first NFL touchdown; it was on offense, against the Chicago Bears." I don't have enough information to upgrade this message into an edit request. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.63.16.20 (talk) 15:38, 13 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There are two errors in the guy above's request. I will help. Please replace the current text: "On October 17, 2014, Jackson was fine $16,537 for a horse-collar tackle on Washington Redskins safety Rashad Johnson in Week 6." with the new text: "On October 17, 2014, Jackson was fined $16,537 for a horse-collar tackle on Arizona Cardinals safety Rashad Johnson in Week 6." He was not "fine" money, he was "fined" money. And he didn't get "fined" tackling someone on his own team. Rashad Johnson plays for the Arizona Cardinals.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.133.11.77 (talkcontribs) 15:23, 18 November 2014‎ (UTC)[reply]

Undue section header[edit]

MichaelRubinator (talk · contribs) has added the "Accusation of Anti-Semitism" section header to this article four times now, and I've removed it a few times as being undue weight for the topic (as well as a violation of WP:RECENTISM). Does anyone believe it makes sense to have a completely separate header for a four-sentence paragraph about a recent event in Jackson's life? I think it's fine as a paragraph within the "Personal life" section since there is only five sentences in that one. Eagles 24/7 (C) 00:23, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • I agree 100%. An entire section should not be devoted to a single incident. If it occurs again then maybe, but it is WP:UNDUE as it stands now to do this. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 00:32, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think I would lower-case the second and third capitalized letters. Otherwise, I think it's fine. First, it does not fit neatly under any of the other headings. Second, it is notable in its own right .. this isn't as though someone shoe-horned his place of birth into a section unto itself. Third, this is not a case of information that is flimsy or of limited moment, which are our concerns with recentism .. recent events are fine to cover; just look at the George Floyd killing one day after he was killed. It was recent. Sure. But that is not the end of the inquiry. Finally, I expect we will see his article suddenly experiencing a doubling, tripling, or more of views. Why? Readers interested in this very section. Use common sense. Let them find it. --2604:2000:E010:1100:60F2:8EF0:DDA0:50F0 (talk) 02:34, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And just as expected, there was a surge in views. In one day, they rose from 497 to 19,000. Those people are drawn to the page by what the anti-semitism section covers. No reason to hide it. Just as readers of the George Floyd, the day after his killing, went to his page specificaly because of the "recent" event. If you read thewp:recentism section, and consider how it is applied, and apply common sense, you will see that this is not a bar at all. Matters are not forbidden from coverage because they are recent - that is a misunderstanding, or what people who only read the title of wp:recentism think. 2604:2000:E010:1100:FC8A:7AAF:4612:F010 (talk) 21:32, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@2604:2000:E010:1100:FC8A:7AAF:4612:F010: Wikipedia:Pageview statistics says Pageview stats refers to how often a page is viewed by others. This is not a measure of notability. I'm sure when Jackson was released by the Eagles in 2014, the page views that day were very high as well, but you wouldn't argue for having an entire section devoted to his release, right? No one in this discussion is arguing that this topic is not worth mentioning in the article, because it is absolutely notable based on the coverage it has gotten so far. But it is substantially notable enough to merit its own section outside of the "Personal life" section? We can't know that for sure just yet, but at the moment it does not appear to be warranted. Eagles 24/7 (C) 23:57, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • @2604:2000:E010:1100:60F2:8EF0:DDA0:50F0: Please review WP:RECENTISM for guidance on dealing with "breaking news" and events that, at the moment, may seem very important, but in the grand scope of things really isn't. If this controversy sticks around for a while, meaning it receives coverage that lasts more than a few days, it may justify a separate header. "Personal life" makes sense here, since it is something that he posted on his personal social media account. Eagles 24/7 (C) 19:06, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I would also note that "controversy" is an inappropriate word to describe the situation, as Jackson's post has been almost universally denounced by the Eagles, NFL, media personnel, analysts, and a few NFL players who have spoke on the subject. A small minority of people have come to his defense (not for the antisemitic aspects), but "controversy" implies there is strong support to go along with the strong opposition. Eagles 24/7 (C) 19:11, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • The use of the word "Controversy" is reasonable because 1) NBA Player Stephen Jackson has come to DeSean Jackson's defense and 2) DeSean Jackson posted the Anti-Semitic comment after posting several posts from Louis Farrakhan, who is still has many public admirers. The fact that many celebrities continue to praise him shows that the views of Farrakhan are not universal.... as DeSean Jackson embraced Farrakhan himself. I would be happy to have it say "Anti-Semitic Comments" if you would prefer, but this is a nation-wide incident and truly newsworthy. I see that your screen name is Eagles247 so it's fair to say you are a fan of the team. I had been a fan of DeSean Jackson for years before this. I will change it to "Anti-Semitic Comments" to remove the "controversy" part.MichaelRubinator (talk) 20:13, 8 July 2020 (UTC)MichaelRubinator[reply]
  • @MichaelRubinator: Being a fan of the team he plays for is not the reason I am opposed to including the individual section header for the post. I am able to separate my fandom from my role on Wikipedia, and would have the same opinion if this were any other player on any other team (as you can see from my comments at Talk:Jermaine Whitehead, for example). One former NBA player vocally supporting Jackson is gaining a lot of traction in the news because he is one of the lone dissenters in an ocean of condemnation. WP:FRINGE says a very small minority viewpoint should not hold much weight in the context of Wikipedia articles. I prefer no section header at all, as it draws unnecessary attention to a subject that may not be all that notable a few years down the road. Wikipedia is not news, so your assertion that "this is [...] truly newsworthy" is not a useful argument. You have again re-added the section header (for the seventh time), and a block will be issued to you shortly for edit warring. Eagles 24/7 (C) 20:26, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's a close call for me, and I know that some people don't like the word at all (though it is often found in articles, and can be descriptive), but on balance I support MichaelR here on the basis of his above arguments. But to me this is less important than the other issue - that it deserves a section. And that is, with wp:recentism in mind, based on my view as to this in historical context. 2604:2000:E010:1100:FC8A:7AAF:4612:F010 (talk) 21:36, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Saying it has historical context is WP:CRYSTALBALLing because this thing could be forgotten in a week. Nobody here is arguing against the inclusion of the paragraph, just it having its own section which may very well never be expanded upon again. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 22:09, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
So - in the days after the George Floyd killing, you would say that it would be crystal balling to say it could be forgotten in a week? I imagine not. We use common sense here, based on our experience with "short-term-news" and new of longer term instance, as applied to the case at hand.2604:2000:E010:1100:B9F3:BB6E:E5DF:F6FE (talk) 14:50, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Include under accomplishments that’s he’s also a Super Bowl champion. He was rewarded a Super Bowl ring and is considered a champion by the teams official website if you search the 2021-22 Rams Super Bowl season roster he’s listed, and he played 8 games for the Rams they went 7-1 during that period.
