Personal life?[edit]

This entry has no information about Lindley's personal life. Is he married? Does he have children? The Wiki biography of Loretta Young's son, Christopher, says they are related but there is no information about that here. This is just a section that is typically included in the Wiki biography of notable people. 69.125.134.86 (talk) 09:16, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is it relevant? Is it reliably sourced? If not, there's no reason to include it. Ghmyrtle (talk) 10:25, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Lindley is a journeyman musician, not a pop star or actor, so those sort of questions don't get asked in interviews. We're more likely to find out what brand of Oud strings he favors than if he's fathered any children. A quick search proves that he has been married. William D. Smith's book A Stroke of Luck says:

Now I'll tell you right now, Lindley's a nice guy and all that, but he's the strangest guy I've ever met in the world. There's nobody, nobody you've ever met like that like him. He has a thing for polyester you wouldn't believe. David Lindley got disturbed at his wife for not letting him decorate the house. Can you imagine what the house would look like if Lindley would decorate it? Lindley's like Pee Wee Herman with long hair.K8 fan (talk) 15:53, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

From that source, it mentions that Lindley has a daughter named Roseanne, who was 21 in 1992. She is a singer. K8 fan (talk) 16:40, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
First, thanks K8 fan for sharing that insight! I'd love to see his house!
Second, I'm not sure why it is such a big deal for those editors who are focused on the musicians' biographies on Wikipedia to include personal information. It is standard for biographies of actors, writers, poets, filmmakers and other artists. It's not about "gossip", it's about
a) What people come to Wikipedia for (to learn about subjects, for a biography, all different aspects of a person's life)
b) An artist's personal life can influence their professional life.
Here's an example: What if Johnny Cash's biography didn't mention his connection to the Carter family or his talented children who've gone on to have musical careers of their own? It makes a difference in an artist's life whether they were never married and died at 25 or if they married many times (like George Jones), had a whole bunch of kids and lived a long life. Life experience surely impacts how that singer or songwriter interprets a song.
To be quite blunt, I don't see how anyone can argue that an individual's personal life DOESN'T influence their arI mean, if an artist struggled with a substance abuse problem, that would be included...why not mention that they have five kids? I'd say being a father or mother is just as important.
I care about Lindley's personal life, how it influenced his art, partially because I'm a fan of his work but also because, like I said above, I came across a note on another page that said that he was related to the family of actress Loretta Young which was a surprise to me.
I am happy though that so many people took the time to respond. I usually don't get answers when I post on Talk Pages, so thanks. 69.125.134.86 (talk) 18:18, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Including information about a subject's family is good. The problem is that it has to come from a third party reference - an interview in a magazine, a book, a web interview. As far as I know, nobody has ever done a biography of Lindley. To find the reference I did, I visited Google Books and searched for "David Lindley" and "Wife". I quickly discovered that there is a physicist with the same name, so I added -physics to exclude all references to physics. Once I did that, I found several references for David Lindley the guitarist. For instance, here is a book that has his birth date.
I would love to include all this, but my plate is very full with the articles I maintain currently. K8 fan (talk) 20:14, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We have articles on Christopher Lewis and Peter Lewis (once of Moby Grape) - the sons of Loretta Young - which say that Lindley is their cousin. That is, Lindley's father was apparently a brother (or half-brother? or step-brother? - the surnames seem to be different) of Loretta Young. But, unless Lindley - or someone else - mentions his family connections in a reliable source, it's hard to see how relevant it is to his article. Quite interesting though, I admit. iTunes Bio[edit]

The biography of David Lindley on the iTunes store lists as one of his accomplishments the following:

"A native of Southern California, Lindley began playing banjo as a teenager and soon added the fiddle. By his late teens, he had acquired a reputation as California's best young instrumentalist, winning the Topanga Canyon banjo and fiddle competition five times."

How do I cite this as a source? At the bottom of the bio it says "Content provided by All Music Guide (c) 2009 All Media Guide, LLC" -- Cdw ♥'s(talk) 15:58, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If the fact is from All Music then you should check All Music and see if it the fact is supported there. If so, use All Music as the reference. The problem with iTunes is that its reliability is not established. Binksternet (talk) 17:16, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Film Music[edit]

The lead claimed that Lindley composed, etc "extensively" for film. Must have been written/included by a friend/flack. @ IMDB his total credits in 3 categories number 12. Not extensive. Compare to J.J. Johnson, Benny Carter, Carol Kaye. Those are musicians with "extensive" film credits. IMDB is a pretty reliable source for film credits, but NOT for biographies. Solo vs. With Other Musicians[edit]

Why are most of the albums listed under Solo Discography actually albums that Lindley did with other musicians? For example the first four are all Kaleidoscope albums - obviously band efforts, with multiple writing credits. Many of the other albums listed even state "with so-and-so" right in the listing. I'm not sure what Wikipedia considers a solo effort exactly, but it can't be defined this broadly without losing all meaning. Leperflesh (talk) 21:35, 13 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'd argue that the Hani Nasser and Wally Ingram things are solo, with the relevant musicians -- both drummers -- being in an accompaning role. PaulCHebert (talk) 21:54, 13 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Cause of death[edit]

He died of long COVID-19 complications, didn't he? 76.190.213.189 (talk) 00:26, 4 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am not a doctor, but I understand from seeing social media posts from his musician colleagues that his severe COVID case in mid-2020 was followed by double pneumonia then major kidney problems and more recently a rough bout of influenza. There was a fundraising effort in early January 2023 to help with medical costs such as dialysis. Binksternet (talk) 01:51, 4 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Shooting Sports[edit]

Here's an L.A. Times article with David talking about target shooting: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1993-11-20-ca-58888-story.html He was a member of the Los Angeles Silhouette Club, until he shot his own toe off during a match. 2600:1700:6AE5:2510:0:0:0:24 (talk) 23:07, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
