Relevant Information?[edit]

Are the names of Lewis' children and grandchildren relevant for the article? No way. Is it important that they're all attending college? I don't think so. This info should be removed and the article should be give a more encyclopedic tone and shape. This is an ARTICLE and not a family bulletin. Lots missing on one of out great conductors[edit]

Lewis is one of the best conductors I've ever played under - even after 38 years of professional playing in the US and Europe. I played in the AFM Congress of Strings in 1973. He filled for someone on one rehearsal for Eine Kleine, which would have boring if his interpretation wasn't the best I'd ever heard. His own program included a prelude and fugue by Glazunov. That performance has stayed with me ever since. I remember seeing audience members in tears. In fact, it was really that beautiful.

As I recall, he was the youngest player ever in the Honolulu Symphony as concert master at 21. He left Pasadena due to disagreements with management over program. He was much into modern music, which caused friction. He conducted the LA Phil once when Giuliani couldn't. After trying to get big names from all over the country, they finally asked Lewis, who lived locally but was ignored. That would have been roughly about 1980. I remember comments at the time that a conductor with a boring WASP name just wasn't as sexy as names like Mehta, Giuliani, and Boulez. At that time, all major orchestras in the US had foreign conductors. The orchestra applauded him after the first rehearsal. I remember that Barber's Music for a Scene from Shelley was on the program. I'd never heard them play that well.

He was very demanding and specific about what he wanted, but when he got it, he had an amazingly wonderful way of showing his appreciation with praise. This created a rare level of cooperation. But what was really great was his skill as an interpreter. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.253.165.57 (talk) 19:47, 10 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
