Neutrality[edit]

The article has too many sentences like "...outstanding average of 14.9 points a game..."; and "...smashing the previous All Blacks record...", so I added the disputed neutrality banner. Please give your opinion on the matter.

Position Name[edit]

Hi, I'm changing the position name from Second Five Eighth to Fly-Half, this is because Second Five Eighth seems to be a name used solely by kiwis, and is confusing to other readers who are not used to calling it that, as the standard worldwide definition is Fly-Half, I appreciate Dan Carter is a New-Zealander, but surely it makes more sense? Honours[edit]

What does the list of Honours mean? Other than the Personal Accolades section, they appear to be achievements by the various teams Carter has played for, and in most cases he has undoubtedly contributed substantially to those achievements, but they are not honours bestowed on him. Various anons are adding "2011 Rugby World Cup winner" to the list, but he didn't even play in the last few games.-gadfium 03:00, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"he didn't even play in the last few games" - Isn't that irrelevant? if you are part of the squad you are World Champion, no matter how many minutes you played. Agree with Gadfium here. A probably incomplete list of trophies won by teams he's played for is not a list of honours awarded to him. It doesn't seem to be conventional here to try to list every trophy won by players in team sports. If we were to keep this list, it would be appropriate to list the World Cup, as he was a member if the squad and I understand he gets a medal, but I'm for trashing the whole list. Instead of trashing the whole list it would be rather smart (and in the sense of an encyclopdia) to make it complete. He's part of the squad who won the title and played an important role in rwaching the final stages. Whether he can call himself World Champion or not is not a matter of Wikipedia to decide. And AFAIK all the players in the squad, even those who didn't play a single minute, are World Champions.
Gadfium, what is so difficult to understand about the list? If you are part of a team and it wins something, you win it, too. It's the same in every other sport. Besides it would be totally unsportsmanlike behaviour to call the 15 or 11 or how many a certain team has World Champions while all the others are left out. Maori heritage[edit]

So after spending some time combing myheritage, ancestry.com and other genealogical sources of Dan Carter, it seems the claim he is of Maori descent has yet to be verified. Basically we have:

  • Thomas John Carter & Florence Rita Greenwood, his grandfather Albert Carter's parents. Both were English.
  • William Coggan Brears & Christina Boswell, his grandfather Raymond Brears's parents. Both were English.
  • Edward Reid Garland and Elsie Allan, his grandmother Neta Brears (nee Garland)'s parents. Both were English.
  • Marion May Free, his grandmother Pam's mother, although born in New Zealand, her parents wereEnglish immigrants who settled at Ross.

Now this is where things get interesting. His grandmother, Pam's father was Huia Gilbert Dalley (brother of All Black, William Charles Dalley). Huia does have a first name that is a Maori word (named after an extinct New Zealand bird). Huia's parents were Charles Thomas Dalley and Charlotte Maria Loveless. Charlotte was an English immigrant but Charles was born in New Zealand.

Charles parents were William Henry Dalley, an English immigrant and Maria Ann (Mary) Quick who was born circa 1839 in Lyttelton. But there isn't much found of her parents and she is the only possible remaining line in Dan Carter's genealogy to substantiate that he is of Maori descent.

A possibility of why his 2x great grandparents named their son "Huia" could be because they heard the name and liked it or someone they were close to was called "Huia" and died the year of their son's birth, so to honour said person they named their son after him as was the tradition of that time. It should be noted that "Gilbert" doesn't appear in any of his line so it's possible if Huia was named in honour of someone, the person could have been called Huia Gilbert.

As reliable sources go, a list of sports people with Maori (and Pacific Island) heritage with no supporting details is pretty weak. The New Zealand Herald is usually regarded as a reliable source, but I think in the light of Smilerreborn's research that we should restore his edit unless new evidence is found.-gadfium 01:49, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with gadfium, the NZHerald article is just a list and doesn't really source where they got their information but because of this list printed in 2010, the claim of Carter's alleged Maori heritage has taken flight and Carter himself has never stated he is of Maori descent. All I was asking was for the bit where it says he is of Maori and pakeha descent be taken down until we can find a more concrete source.
