- Suggest this article be renamed to Daisy Irani Shukla, since the other Daisy Irani is also an actress. It's strange to use (actress) for this one only. Icedwater (talk) 13:46, 22 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 27 April 2023[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: Moved and disambiguate both. This has been stalled for long and rough consensus exists for disambiguating both the entries. Subsequently I will create a disambiguation page at Base name. (non-admin closure) >>> Extorc.talk 07:23, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

– Both are actresses, one in films and the other on television. The film actress is the primary topic. She was a child actor in the 1950s, switched to adult roles, and continues to be active. The TV actor is known more as a producer-director and media head, hence my preferred disambiguator of television "personality" (there are several articles that use the disambiguator "television personality"). The TV personality's career graph started relatively later (from 1997 as per IMDb), and she was initially credited as Daisy Irani Subaiah. There are 33 incoming links from mainspace to Daisy Irani, however most of them are for the film actress, and not many corrections have to be made. There are 72 incoming links from mainspace to Daisy Irani (actress) and no corrections need to be made as long as Daisy Irani (actress) is a redirect to the article on the film actress. If Daisy Irani (actress) has to be deleted (as ambiguous) or made a disambiguation page, the incoming links have to be fixed, but that is a separate exercise independent of this RM. Jay 💬 07:19, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Television personality does not cut it for Singapore's Daisy Irani as it seems that she has been acting in theatres from at least 2010.
With 12k+ pageviews for the actress from India, and 2k+ pageviews for the Singapore one, I don't think there is a case for primary topic at the moment.
While Singapore's Irani was credited with her full name initially, she is commonly reported as Daisy Irani in news articles.
I would rather the articles be move in the following manner, with the base name as a dab page:
– robertsky (talk) 09:38, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The 2k+ pageviews for Daisy Irani could also mean readers are looking for the film actress, not the Singapore one. A Google search for example shows the difference in results when searched for ["Daisy Irani" "Singapore"], ["Daisy Irani" -Singapore] or ["Daisy Irani" Subaiah]. My issue with the "Singaporean actress" disambiguator is that the lead of her article says she is an Indian actress. It also says she accompanied her husband from India to Singapore, so the citizenship is unclear. Agree with your theatre point, but also actress is not the ideal disambiguator considering her other roles. Jay 💬 10:58, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
On looking for the film actress, it is possible, but unlikely. Wikinav shows limited clickthroughs to the film actress' article despite the hatnote on the top of the article. Her citizenship is clear if you dig a bit deeper: Singapore citizenship since 2004. – robertsky (talk) 13:32, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for cleaning up the Singaporean article. The lead that says "Indian actress" has still not been changed. It is odd that although 60-70% of traffic to the Singaporean actress comes from links intended for the Indian actress, the hatnote is not being used to go to the right article. I don't know if it was because the hatnote said actress in Hindi and Telugu language films, which I (found confusing and) modified. In any case we can revisit this once the incoming links are fixed. I'll still stick to the Indian actress being the primary topic, unless there is more opinion. Jay 💬 16:02, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah... I was pulled away from this for a meeting. I have also found this interview, which indicates that the Singaporean actress had also acted in films and plays, and even won a state award for her performance before she migrated to Singapore. Since many of these are non-English, we would probably have to find local/regional news articles from the 60s to 80s printed in non-English language medium to further substantiate the assertion/flesh out her filmography. Nonetheless, this does indicate that she likely has notability outside of being a television personality. – robertsky (talk) 17:29, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And yeah... regarding the lead, Singapore still buckets her people into generalised races for policy reasons to the point that it is actually understandable to Singapore citizens and residents. – robertsky (talk) 17:36, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Daisy Irani (actress)Daisy Irani. Primary topic. The other one is more tricky. She doesn't really appear to be a television personality as such. She was born in India and much of her work was actually done in India, not Singapore, so "Singaporean actress" is also not the best disambiguator. A year of birth would be the best disambiguator, as Daisy Irani (actress, born XXXX), but there isn't one listed. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:20, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • For the Singaporean entry, we can have it tentatively at Daisy Irani Subaiah, and have a separate discussion for a proper title. If a better title is found, Daisy Irani Subaiah will become a redirect to that. Jay 💬 13:45, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • Is she known as Daisy Irani Subaiah at all? -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:50, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I went through all refs in the article. Found 3 that use Daisy Irani Subaiah- 123. Many others were dead links, and rest used only Daisy Irani. Jay 💬 16:37, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
      Looks like it's not her WP:COMMONNAME then. -- Necrothesp (talk) 17:02, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Which ones are dead links? The last I went through, most are accessible. – robertsky (talk) 17:04, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You are right, I click the longest links out of habit, and miss out on the tiny archived links! (Which is why I don't use the {{Webarchive}} template) This is for the channelnewsasia and todayonline ones. So now, only the nlb.gov.sg source is problematic. It goes to a Terms and Conditions of Use page, and it doesn't allow us to agree to the terms! And cancel takes us back to Wikipedia. In any case, for purposes of this discussion, the archived pages mentioned her name as Daisy Irani. Jay 💬 06:34, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jay Are you trying to access the nlb link from outside of Singapore? It is working for me since I am accessing within Singapore. I just had a conversation with someone from the library a couple of days ago and he said that there are some limitations as to who can access what articles from the archive from outside the library. In any case, this article refers to her as 'Daisy Irani' Fans of "Under One Roof" will be pleased to know that Andrew Lim and Daisy Irani are joining forces for the laugh-a-minute production, "suite Hearts", which will be staged at The Atrium Ballroom at The Westin Stamford.. – robertsky (talk) 06:51, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, outside of Singapore. I select the I agree checkbox and click the I Agree button. The page just flickers and shows the same page again. No error or message shown. In any case, I think we'll need more participation, or a compromise solution as long as there is no agreement on the primary topic or a tentative title. Jay 💬 07:04, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sigh... Maybe it might be a nice addition to The Wikipedia Library. – robertsky (talk) 07:08, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Relisting comment: Relisted for further discussion on the target for the second article. Captain Jack Sparrow (talk) 15:56, 14 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Disambiguate both per robertsky's suggestion. No clear primary, and disambiguating both will provide a clearer picture of views such that we could reevaluate in the future. But for now, disambiguate both so that wikilinks can be cleaned up to ensure they are reaching the intended targets. -- Netoholic @ 17:06, 14 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
