Deletion without comment[edit]

Someone deleted this section:

'The main theories for cross-cultural communication are based on the work done looking at value differences (or Cultural dimensions) among cultures, especially the works of Edward T. Hall, Geert Hofstede, Harry C. Triandis, Fons Trompenaars and more recently Shalom Schwartz. Clifford Geertz was also a major contributor to this field.'

I wonder why, since there is no argumentation or comment for this deletion. I think these cultural dimensions are very interesting aspects for this realm. I reinsert this section. If there is a reason not to reinstert it, it should be discussed. Otherwise it seems to be an act of vandalism. --194.114.62.65 09:32, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Theorists[edit]

There is a long list of theorists, but very few of them have an article on WP. Please could those who know anything about the red-linked theorists start pages for them, or at least, let us know here why they should not be deleted for lack of notability? This section also mentions a lot of people by name and their theories, all of which are red-links. Apart from a copy-edit, some work is needed here to make this section worthy of inclusion in its current form - i.e. are these people notable? Merger proposal[edit]

This article was recently redirected to Intercultural communication. A merge is preferable to a redirect given the referenced content and the use of different sources in the two articles. I propose that Cross-cultural communication be merged into Intercultural communication, unless other editors weigh in with an explanation of how these terms are sufficiently different to warrant separate articles. The term cross-cultural communication is comparative in nature, while intercultural communication often deals with the interactions between individuals with different cultural backgrounds. In other words, they focus on different aspects. Furthermore, intercultural communication is often seen as a broader term. According to this view, cross-cultural communication is a major field of the study of intercultural communication. (See Gudykunst's Cross-Cultural and Intercultural Communication) The problem is, some scholars do not distinguish the two. My point is, the two terms could be distinguished, but the contents currently on Wikipedia do not follow the criterion, and thus are confusing. Agree with Yucheng oh his first part...However, Intercultural communication has an added nuance from the cross cultural communication, though majority of the principles apply for both. The stress on the "differences" within cultures and the need to respect, maintain and promote them positively for the sake of enrichment of humanity, is a bit more felt 'inetercultural' communication. Theorists and Other Cultures[edit]

This topic of Cross-cultural communications is so vast. This includes information on other cultures around the world and not just the U.S. communications/interacts with these cultures, but how the interact with one another. There are also theorists from other parts of the world that give insight to intercultural communications in other regions. Wouldn't this topic be easier to understand if there was a worldly approach to it? (DTL808 (talk) 19:44, 13 September 2019 (UTC))[reply]

Article Review[edit]

Firstly, the introduction of Cross-Cultural Communication as an academic discipline appears limited. It may be useful to look at the page on Emotion as an example of how a human phenomenon is first introduced and then research on the subject is mentioned, which then brings in the different academic fields which study the phenomenon.

As already mentioned by other editors, the article is also too US-centric. I would also add that the article needs more examples from different cultures. Research studies, initiatives, projects such as intercultural films, organizations from various cultures demonstrating and grappling with issues in intercultural communication would be useful. So would more images and links to media sources.

As already noted, the section on Aspects lacks any references. In addition, some of the references for all sections need links to the original source. Elements that made this article seem not-so-.great[edit]

- This article had many many facts, but lacked citations.

- The article had sentences like "sometimes people..." without stating or citing who these people are.

- This article added many key terms and new concepts, but only talked about them briefly without adding citations, examples, nor detailed information.

- There were many warning banners throughout the article, which made it seem less reliable.
