Untitled[edit]

I'm dissatisfied in several ways with

the mestizo Mexican cultural area (which includes the Southern states of the United States, taken from Mexican sovereignship [sic] in the mid to late 19th. Century).

For one thing, most of the southern states of the United States--Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi--were never under Mexican sovereignty at all, though several of them did belong to Spain in the colonial period.

For another, nearly all of the territory that the United States took from Mexico directly or indirectly was acknowledged as US territory by Mexico by the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, in 1848, in exchange for $15,000,000 plus some debt relief. Mexico then sold what's now a small portion of southern Arizona and southern New Mexico to the US in 1854, in the Gadsden Purchase.

Result? Our current wording seems to imply that the whole of the southern US is rightfully Mexican and was (wrongfully?) wrested away by the US sometime in (say) the 1870s, whereas in reality it was just the southwestern United States and it was ceded by legal treaty in exchange for money around the year 1850. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.213.77.129 (talk • contribs)

Peer Review[edit]

Hi there! Here are some suggestions I have for this article.

•A lot more citations need to be added here. The “History” section is all one source. There needs to be a lot more secondary source analysis here, as this is just from one source.

•Maybe an “Impact” section or something like that? And some separate sections for the effects of corrido on big historical events like the Mexican Revolution.

•More content on the “Musical characteristics” section. Maybe some stuff on what kind of instruments/voices were used as well.

•It would be great to add an audio file to listen to a corrido on this page; this would add a lot more to the article.

•Is the “Form” section under the “Narcorrido” part describing the form of a corrido or narcorrido? This is unclear and should be fixed.

Weird source claims?[edit]

Hello. I have found two weird claims with either a strange source or no source at all for the "Narcocorridos" section.

"This new genre of music, mostly popularized in Mexico, borderlands and southwestern United States." I removed this sentence just because it was a fragment sentence, but it also had no source at all.

"Narcocorridos, because of their nature of lyrics, have become illegal in Mexico since 2016." I did not remove this sentence, but it needs a better source. This makes a claim from 2016 but the source is a 1972 book.

Naming consistency for Gregorio Cortez[edit]

In the section about Gregorio Cortez after his first mention, he should either be referred to as Gregario, or Cortez, probably the latter. The constant switching between first and last name is confusing.

‘Gregorio Cortez’ and ‘Ballad and impact of Gregorio Cortez’ sections should be combined[edit]

We're reading through descriptions of the genre and subgenres, and then all of a sudden we're reading some kind of bio or case study pertaining to a man, the reason for being included here not even being revealed until the last paragraph or two.
