This was a pretty good article until I got to the Water Chemistry part and the links provided.

The link to the Brackish Water Aquarium FAQ has very inaccurate Rainbowfish facts: "Only a little salt is needed for most rainbowfishes". Rainbowfish are freshwater fish, not brackish water fish. No fresh water fish should have salt put in their water on a long-term basis.

They are also listed on that page as possible low-end brackish tank mates. Rainbowfish are NOT brackish water fish and should not be kept in brackish water. They tolerate brackish water as a survival tactic on a short term basis. That does not mean they should live in it permanently. The only member of Family Melanotaenidae that is "commonly" found in brackish water is Melanotaenia nigrans, which isn't even listed on that page.

One more note: Gyrinocheilus aymonieri is far more commonly known in the hobby as the Chinese or Golden Algae Eater.

Rainbow fish are brackish water fish. They will do just fine in freshwater, but would benefit from roughly one teaspoon of salt per gallon. ^Drew Smith 12:15, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
