Spam[edit]
The logo is being used for cryptocurrency spam marketing purposes. This reads like a advertorial anyway. Should it be taken down? 14.202.81.228 (talk) 02:29, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
- What? Wikipedia only displays the logo for informational purposes, and has no control over how spammers use elsewhere. Are you asking of the Wikipedia article should be taken down? How, exactly, is it like an advertorial? Grayfell (talk) 02:34, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
- Read the content of the article, and pause to think if the only reason the article is here is as an anchor point for legitimising the spam contents to bypass spam detection. The spam link in the email is to https://upload.wikimedia.org<insert obligatory scrambler to prevent display and spidering>/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2e/Coinmarketcap_svg_logo.svg/2560px-Coinmarketcap_svg_logo.svg.png
- I'm not a Wiki superstar. Please help: You are welcome to re-upload the exact same logo and call it something else to frustrate the spammers, and then point the quoted URL to another logo that says they are being spammed or phished. That would satisfy my urge to frustrate the spammers while preserving the contents of the article as it stands, even if I have my misgivings about the existence. - Ah, okay. In general, articles exist because multiple reliable, independent sources have discussed a topic. It appears Coinmarketcap meets the project's guideline Wikipedia:Notability, but only barely.
- Creating a warning image at that location is interesting idea, but we don't know exactly who is using that file other than spammers. The file File:Coinmarketcap svg logo.svg is on Wikimedia Commons which is a sister project with different goals and standards than Wikipedia. We would need a specific reason to propose deleting it from there, and in addition to the English Wikipedia, ten other projects use that file, including Wikidata.
- As I said, we have no real control over how other people use these files, and I don't think Wikimedia would be willing to create a lot of work just to potentially frustrate a few spammers, briefly, even if it is a noble goal. Grayfell (talk) 03:41, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
