Fair use rationale for Image:MacDowallCrest.gif[edit]

Image:MacDowallCrest.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Move article to Clan Macdowall[edit]

I think the title of the article should be Clan Macdowall (small "d"). This is the way the clan name is shown on the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs website.--Celtus (talk) 09:24, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Moved.--Celtus (talk) 08:45, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Macdowall or Macdougall?[edit]

As a MacDowell myself, I must ask. I've always been told that my family surname comes from The clan MacDougall. In fact most sites about scotish clans point the MacDowell surname to MacDougall. I am a bit dubious about the information found here. --Pinnecco (talk) 13:06, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Clan MacDowell is an official Scottish clan that is officially recognised by the Lyon Court under Scottish law. As is Clan MacDougall. Both clans have their own separate chiefs both individually recognized under Scottish law. So they are not the same clan. However the clans appear to have been allies - both as enemies of the Bruce during War of Independence. Also both surnames are derived from the gaelic: Mac Dubhghaill. mjgm84 (talk) 14:07, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there. Long overdue reply, I know. But I've been trying to research my clan (MacDowell vs MacDougall) and there are a lot of sites that point out that MacDowell is, in fact, a 'sept' of MacDougall.
Moreover when I've been in Scotland I looked into some shops and all searches for MacDowell brought me to MacDougall. Even a representative of the McDougall society of North America told me once MacDowell is a 'sept' name of the clan MacDougall. This makes it all a bit dubious. Isn't there some sort of official government site that holds a record of all official clan names?
My concern is that perhaps both the MacDougall and the MacDowall articles to explain better the connection between both clans. --Pinnecco (talk) 12:46, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Most of that is irrelevant because both clans have their own chief officially recognized under Scottish law. However if you would like to edit the articles to better explain their connections then you are welcome to do so, but word of warning: make sure any info you add is properly sourced. Any unsourced info can be removed from Wikipedia. Both articles are currently to a reasonable standard and to keep it that way any new information needs to be properly sourced. You are also not to remove existing sourced info without prior discussion.QuintusPetillius (talk) 18:25, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Good stuff. I am currently in talks with the Standing Council of Scotthish Chiefs and I will also try to gather as much sourceable information that I can. I have also ordered a book on Amazon about the clan, which I hope that I can source in the edition of this article. --Pinnecco (talk) 08:29, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Clan MacdowallClan MacDowall – Notwithstanding the entry in the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs cited in the page move in 2008 above, which lists the clan as "Clan Macdowall", the majority of other sources use a capital "D", including here the statement that " In 1987 the Clan Chief designated the proper spelling of the clan name as MacDowall with the letter "D" capitalised, though the small letter “d” is used in many of its family surnames." See the clan's website and [2], [3], [4], etc PamD 16:12, 6 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
