Industry[edit]

I'll check but I believe its the opposite way round in that the government wanted to establish a heavy industrail area near perth BP, BHP, CBH, SEC(western Power), Alcoa? where given land in the area. The petro chemical industry is from the 1980's, there was also some involvement with expansion of BPRK and the production of clean fuels, together with the WA Inc. events.

If it's any help, an Industrial Area (Kwinana Area) Act 1952 (No.2 of 1952, assented 27 March 1952, with long title "AN ACT to Authorise, subject to Special Conditions, the Acquisition of and Dealing with Certain Land for Industry and for other Purposes; and for incidental matters." came into being. The thing's downloadable on SLP under "Acts as passed" - it is, however, 27 MB. s5(1) allows (until 31 Dec 1953) the Governor, on recommendation of the Minister, to "set apart, take or resume any part or parts of the land in relation to which this Act applies, as in the opinion of the Minister is or may be, either immediately or in the future, required for an industry or a public work, or for any purpose of town planning." Strangely, the area shaded in the attached map contains well over half of the City of Cockburn, including all of Spearwood, Munster, Coogee, Yangebup and Bibra Lake. The amendments to that act give some interesting information. Apparently there was an agreement between the State and Anglo-Iranian Oil Company Limited. (On examination, this deal was put into statute by the Oil Refinery Industry (Anglo-Iranian Oil Company Limited), no.1 of 1952, assented 27 March 1952, long title "AN ACT to Approve, Ratify and Confirm an Agreement relating to the Establishment and Working of an Oil Refinery in the State; to enable the Carrying Out of the Agreement; and for other and incidental purposes.")

Also, some of the land was Commonwealth-owned and was purchased by the State in 1954. The 1959 amendment describes this land but it is in incomprehensive cadastral/title/folio babble and I can't follow it. The Act was repealed in 1985, however this looks like a formality. Newspaper report re refinery[edit]

Suburb of "Kwinana"[edit]

There is no suburb called "Kwinana". The official name of the area the locals commonly call "Kwinana" is actually "Kwinana Beach". It includes all the area where heavy industry and the Kwinana Mototplex are located. The official name of the area where the Council chambers, Shopping Centre, municipal swimming pool, etc. is located is "Kwinana Town Centre" --Lanyon (talk) 14:53, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thats right, see Kwinana Beach, Western Australia. This article is about the local government area called 'Town of Kwinana' and much of whats here should be moved across there. Moondyne 15:02, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
