Comments[edit]

Chimney sweeps suffered the first documented cases of occupational cancers, due to a carcinogenic component of coal dust (benzo(a)pyrene) which is also found in cigarette smoke. One of the best known and longest studied links of a specific chemical to cancer. Jed 17:47, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Many chimney sweeps were mistreated and carried to the hospital. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.92.52.201 (talk) 02:44, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"it is only in the last two hundred years that the chimney has grown large enough to hold a man" - clearly the author has never looked up a chimney in a medieval castle... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.209.26.189 (talk) 10:19, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

comment from Hungary: we also consider chimney sweep as a lucky symbol just like in Germany. Chimney sweep figures are popular new year's eve decorations. There are also chimney sweep or chimney sweeping tool shaped chocolates. The superstition says if you see a chimney sweep you have to grasp on one of your buttons and say a little rhyme "Kéményseprőt látok, szerencsét kívánok!" which means: I'm seeing a chimney sweep, I'm wishing for luck! Sorry if I wrote this to the wrong place but I didn't know where to write and I didn't want to edit the article.

Legislation in Germany[edit]

The part of "Legislation in Germany" is not correct and not the whole story, please take a look at chimney sweep in german-wikipedia " Geschichte"..

This should be featured[edit]

This. This is the best wiki article I have ever read. It is pure encyclopedic literature, and should be used as a model for all articles on this website. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.186.162.238 (talk) 06:46, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Its social history importance and link to the first Occupational disease does make it potential Featured Article material. JRPG (talk) 16:09, 24 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have no experience of the process and have limited availability until Sept but will help further if someone is willing to lead it. --ClemRutter (talk) 21:18, 24 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I have no FA experience, and no historical knowledge base in the area, but am happy to keep a watch on it, and might make odd improvements where I can. (But not this week - I am off to Anglesey to see what the rain is like there). RobinLeicester (talk) 00:02, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
One immediate problem is that it mostly uses one source. JRPG (talk) 22:52, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, as the 1940s novel and an image already was added, linked to Kaminfegerkinder (Spazzacamini), meaning "child chimney sweepers", usually originating in the Swiss Valle Verzasca in the 19th century maybe early 20th century. The interesting wiki i enjoyed to read for the first time, and please feel free to place the some words added at a more adequate section :-) Thx for takting notice and kindly regards, Roland zh 00:40, 18 November 2014 (UTC) [fixed ~00:52, 18 November 2014]

measurements[edit]

A description of chimney measurements occurs in almost 10 places in the article. Do a ctrl f of search terms "9in" and "9 in" to see what I'm talking about. How many times do we have to be told that the chimney could be as narrow as 9 inches? This description only needs to occur once in the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 162.82.215.197 (talk) 15:48, 12 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Product placement[edit]

Wikipedia does not allow product placement- this has been discussed many times. If an editor has strong views on why an commercial organisation needs to be included it is still better to discuss it here. -- Clem Rutter (talk) 07:30, 13 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Arjayay: I have suggested that you bring the facts here- rather than get involved in an edit war. Looking at the web page you are attempting to link- it certainly doesn't look like a trade association page, and I don't think it would stand as a reference never mind as a information site where we can learn more about the topic. It appears to be a primary source for someone wishing to purchase training. Do have a look at the MOS before replying.-- Clem Rutter (talk) 19:41, 13 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Clem Rutter - I'm not "attempting to link" anything, I'm reverting people trying to remove it, without providing a proper explanation. I know nothing about Chimney sweep associations, but this seems to be "the new boy on the block" which has annoyed the existing 4 way split. I have also removed the duplication of links to these 4/5 enterprises - they were in the article and in external links. - Arjayay (talk) 07:29, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Arjayay: All this can be solved by deleting all material that does not have a notable reference- the section Modern Chimney sweeping has no references- so the whole lot could go. Alternatively, all the contentious lists are already in a Modern Chimney sweeping article so we could just delete the trade body lists and rely on the link, and take the edit war over there. Mid winter greetings. -- Clem Rutter (talk) 11:31, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Clem Rutter - I don't have a problem with that - it is the repeated deletion without any attempt at an explanation that appears PoV - Arjayay (talk) 11:37, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Excessive focus on the UK/USA[edit]

This article seems too narrowly focused on the UK (and to a lesser extent the US). What about sweeps in continental Europe, Canada, or Asia?Mirza Ahmed (talk) 01:53, 31 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Not a sufficient amount of content to warrant its own article, and not a single source. Makes sense just to merge into main article and redirect this. — Berrely • TalkContribs 18:36, 22 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support, it already reads like a continuation of this article. --Lord Belbury (talk) 12:13, 15 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Support, as above, doesn't seem to require a seperate article. CrossHouses (talk) 21:47, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Redirected, given the abscence of any unique, referenced content on that page. Klbrain (talk) 07:39, 22 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
