Sister cities

I removed: "== Sister cities == Savannah, Georgia" as it doesn't appear to be correct in a formal sense[1]. Most formal sister city agreements are between cities in different countries, as well. Niteowlneils 01:31, 18 August 2005 (UTC)

I moved the sister cities section further down in the page, which is in agreement with the standard location of this section on other city pages. Savannah & Boston have also been removed, as they are not listed as sister cities on the official Sister Cities International website. As Savannah, Charleston, & Boston are all in the US, I find it unlikely that any of these cities would ever have had a formal sister city relationship, as has been stated above, this relationship is for cities in different countries. Dr. Cash 23:30, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

After reading a bit by him in TIME (Sep 12, 2005), I started an entry based on what was quick and easy to find. I am sure that there is much more to add. Anyone wish to help? --Tony Hecht 23:43, 8 September 2005 (UTC)

Slave Trade

Charleston's role as a major hub in the American slave trade seems to be largely glossed over in this article, even though it mentions that there was a black majority (of slaves) in Charleston at points in its history and touches on the widespread roles of slaves in Charleston. Shouldn't this be acknowledged in the history of the city?

I agree that this is important. It would seem especially timely to expand that section of the articles since the Old Slave Mart Museum will soon be opening to the public again, funded by the city of Charleston. According to the New York Times, the new musuem will be one of the biggest musuems in the South focused on slavery.[2] mennonot 19:26, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Also, plans are underway for the Charleston African-American Museum. I've heard that 1/3 of the nations' slaves entered the US through the port of charleston, but I've no source. Anybody? I also feel this page needs more Gullah/Geechee info, but I don't have time to research it properly right now. Tuckerma 15:13, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Current Population

This page states, "As of 2005, the Census Bureau estimated the population of the city proper as 110,483, a 13.8% growth over the population as of the 2000 census." However, the 2004 estimated figure I'm getting from the U.S. Census Bureau is 104,883 (Source). Also, what is the source of the metro population? The figures I've seen say 583,434 for 2004. 199.79.253.122 00:48, 6 December 2005 (UTC)

I agree. The metro population figures seem to be highly inflated and not in accordance with the U.S. Census Bureau's statistics. 162.6.225.224 03:45, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

Local malls

I've removed this list from the main page. Malls generally aren't particularly notable for encyclopedia articles. None of these have links to articles anyways. Dr. Cash 01:59, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

  • Citadel Mall
  • The Shops at Charleston Place
  • Northwoods Mall (Northwoods Mall is actually within the city limits of North Charleston, South Carolina).
  • Mount Pleasant Towne Centre (Neo-Traditional mall within the town limits of Mount Pleasant).
  • Tanger Outlet Mall - Complete in 2007 (Tanger Outlet Mall is actually within the city limits of North Charleston, South Carolina)

Economy

This article could really use an 'Economy' section, containing a description of the types of businesses and industry located in the city. More than just a listing of companies headquartered here. Dr. Cash 04:59, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

Adding a list of 'famous restaurants' is not exactly what I was talking about for expanding the 'economy' section. Some of the older restaurants, historical-type restaurants, might be noted under a 'tourism' section, but doesn't describe much about the overall economy (unless the economy is heavily dependent on tourism. But simply listing restaurants is bordering on spam, as wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a travel brochure and not a source for advertisements. Major restaurant chains that might be based in the city is notable, as corporate headquarters. Dr. Cash 03:22, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Well then, Dr., I suggest you get to work and expand the section yourself.

Earthquake

I wounder how many Charlestonian are even aware of that 7.5 in 1886, and the threat another quake poses. Also, why isn't there an article on the Charleston Quake.--Lionheart Omega 02:09, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

As a Charlestonian, I will answer that the Great Earthquake, which permanently left its mark on the city, is very, very well remembered in Charleston history, as is the purportedly immenent threat of a coming earthquake due to the fault line running through St. George's Parish. Minor tremors are not uncommon.

intro

"Charleston brims with the culturally unique, such as the joggling board." -- that doesn't read quite smoothly, does it? Culturally unique things, or culturally unique events? Maybe "culturally unique traditions"? 131.111.8.102 20:20, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

I agree, maybe even leave out joggling board. Johnbdylan 06:14, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Greenberg's Judaism

My understanding was that former Police Chief Reuben Greenberg belonged to the Conservative branch of Judaism. I have not changed the statement in the article to the contrary because I am not absolutely sure. Any sources? --Midnite Critic 23:33, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

slave; race;...

It is my impression that variations of "slave" appear about six times {"slaves", "slavery"}.

&, "race" appears once, in this context:

"...which is held annually in May and features tall ships, boatbuilding, and the Charleston to Bermuda Race."

This morning I heard a documentary on Worldlink describe a variety of racist dirty tricks, including the city's annexation policies. I, hereby, advocate that this would be included.

Thank You.

Restoring a long missing section

On 11:22, 8 September 2006 a vandal at 168.216.99.236 blanked a section called After the United States Declaration of Independence. This was the first of a string of vandalism edits by this user. Though the graffiti he wrote was eventually reverted, the section was never restored. This left the article with a significant gap between the "Early History" section and the Civil War section. Since then, there's been some attempt to fill in this gap with an account of the revolutionary war, but there's been little attention to the time between the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.

I've attempted to integrate the old section that was removed back into the article. As a way of organizing the added material, I've added two new section: "Commerce and Expansion" and "Pre-Civil War Political Changes". I'd welcome any feedback or help in integrating this old section which can be found here with the current article. mennonot 23:53, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Latin?

I think it's kinda silly to give the Latin version of the name. I am removing it. If anyone feels like it has real encyclopedic value, please say so. --SECurtisTX | talk 18:34, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

All lists

I don't know if there's anyone really dedicated to working with this article, but it needs a lot of work. My first suggestions are to weedeat the pointless external links, transform all the cited sources that are currently in list form under "References" into cite.php form per WP:CITE so that they cite specific data/statements in the article, and to consider what lists are really important, remove the ones that aren't, and transform the lists you keep into prose. I've gone through and done some minor cleaning of the article so that at least its formatting is consistent and there aren't any blatant errors (a wikiproject notice at the top? ouch.) Also, something's wrong with the geographic data. The land value + the water value does not equal the total value. I'm sure if you go back and look at one of the really old versions of the article, you can find the correct values. -- drumguy8800 C T 02:26, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Racial makeup

Why is the racial makeup information in the first paragraph of Geography and Climate? --Cryptic C62 · Talk 10:20, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

This,

"The racial makeup of Charleston is 58.5%(white), 35.0%(black), 5.0%(Asian), and 10.50%(Latino)"

does not add up to 100% and is much different than the census 2005 figures for charleston county. http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/45/45019.html

Asian persons, percent, 2005 (a) 1.3% 1.1% Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, percent definition and source info Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, percent, 2005 (a) 0.1% 0.1% Persons reporting two or more races, percent definition and source info Persons reporting two or more races, percent, 2005 1.1% 0.8% Persons of Hispanic or Latino origin, percent definition and source info Persons of Hispanic or Latino origin, percent, 2005 (b) 3.1% 3.3%

According to

http://www.census.gov/prod/2006pubs/smadb/smadb-06.pdf

Charleston-North Charleston, 65.2, 31.6, 1.6, 0.4, 0.1, 2.4

This also does not add up to 100%. The extra 1.3% is explained in the foot note which indicates

"1Persons of Hispanic origin may be any race"

Fair use rationale for Image:CARTAlogo.jpg

Image:CARTAlogo.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Firefighter Information

Perhaps the Firefighter deaths should be put in it's own section under "Recent history" or perhaps it's own article when more information is available.

If that's the case, it would be fair to put all firefighter (and police) deaths in their own sections/articles under history or "Death while On Duty?" (This unsigned comment left by User:Hourick 01:00, 20 June 2007)

Just my opinion, but the 'Emergency services' section of this article could easily be expanded. If there is a separate article created, it should be City of Charleston Fire Department. Best, MoodyGroove 01:05, 20 June 2007 (UTC)MoodyGroove
I agree. Seems that many of the city's First Responder's sections are nothing more then a blurb on the main page or a stub in their own sections.

Incorrect population listed

The population listed for the City of Charleston, SC is incorrect. For 2004 it should be listed as 107,845. The number that is currently listed (107,844,213,222)is impossible for our small city!! I wish I could correct this, but I can't get to that section of this article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.23.104.144 (talk) 15:15, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

In re: religious tolerance

Providence, at all of Rhode Island colony, extended religious tolerance to all religions, even non-Christian ones, as for example Tauro Synagogue. The fact that it did not have a Huguenot church does not mean that one would have not been welcomed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.234.215.23 (talk) 00:46, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
