How is it known that Charles Lechmere was a meat cart driver? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aryga55 (talk • contribs) 12:51, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Employment records and 2 seperate inquest records. The latter being the Whitechapel murders, the 1st 4 years earlier were a young child died after Lechmere's cart hit him in the road. 50.78.234.106 (talk) 19:44, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There are no records that say Charles Cross was a meat cart driver. The inquest records show he worked for Pickfords, a general delivery service. Pickfords has lost Charles Cross' employment records, so they can't be used to source anything. Edward321 (talk) 21:03, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
At the moment the "Known for" section in the info box says simply "Jack the Ripper suspect". However his emergence as a suspect is a relatively recent phenomenon (as far as we know he was not a suspect identified as such by the original investigation). However, as Charles Cross, he did achieve attention at the time and in any number of books written about the Whitechapel Murders, as the person who was reported to have discovered Mary Ann Nichols' body - and thus for several works and investigators the person who discovered the first victim of Jack the Ripper. Obviously far more attention has been given to him in recent years following his being advanced as a suspect (including the fact that he was known as Lechmere), but I wonder if it should be reworded to something more general like "involvement in Jack the Ripper case" or "Jack the Ripper case witness and suggested suspect"? I would welcome others' thoughts on this. Dunarc (talk) 21:01, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
