To what extent does Challex's industry (wine and agriculture, mainly) contribute to the Pays de Gex in todays context of globalisation? Does it at all? Please answer, I'm curious to know...


Of all the language articles on Challex, the German one is by the most complete, and without any hint of irony.... anyone want to polish the translation?

Geographie[edit]

Challex is at 485m, about 14 km west of Geneva. The winegrowing village extends in the southwest Pays de Gex at pleasant situation on the south slope of the hill back over theRhône valley, east Jura, in Geneva basins close to the frontier with Switzerland. The surface 8,67 km² of this large commune covers a section of the Pays de Gex. The southern border runs along the Rhône, which meanders across the floor of a 300 to 500m wide valley.

Below Challex the Rhône powers a hydro-electric power plant. tertiary the xxxxof Geneva was over-formed by the ice-age Rhone glacier. By erosion, the Rhone cut itself after the ice age into the deposits, cretaing a 60m deep valley. From the river course the municipality area extends to the adjacent plateau (approximately 430m) and the elevator backs of Challex, on with 516 the m the highest point of the municipality is reached. The plateau is subdivided by erosion gutter the n of different short side brooks of the Rhône, under it also the Ruisseau of the Charmilles , which forms the eastern border. In the west the border runs along the brook Groise . To Challex also different Weiler and farmsteads belong, under it beside the actual place: * Gaillardin (400 m ü. M.) on the terrace north the Rhône underneath the village * Mucelle (500 m ü. M.) on the elevator back of Challex * Marougy (422 m ü. M.) on the plateau west the Rhônetals Neighbour municipalities of Challex are Pougny in the south, Péron in the west as well as the Swiss municipalities Dardagny in the north, Avully in the east and Chancy in the extreme south.

Challex is mentioned for the first time in the year 1298 under the name Chaloys . In the course the time the spelling changed to Chaloes (1308), Chalois (1332), Chaloex (1344), Chalay (1397) to the today's name Challex, which appeared in 1437. later still the designations Challaix (1738) and Chalais (in 18th Century). The place name probably goes back to the Gallo-Roman name Calius and means as much as Land of the raven (Caliacum). In the Middle Ages Challex seat of the Kastlanei Corbière was, in 13. and 14. Century scene of the disputes between Grafen of Geneva and the counts of Savoyen was. In 14. Century came the village under the sovereignty of the Savoyer. Afterwards Challex divided eventful history Pays de Gex, with it after conclusion of the contract of Lyon 1601 finally at France arrived. ==Sehenswürdigkeiten== The parish church of Challex originally decreases/goes back on one romani building. Since in the middle of the 1960er years was registered a continuous strong population growth. Outside of the old local centre numerous new single family houses were built. ==Wirtschaft and Infrastruktur== Challex was until far in 20. Century inside predominantly by agriculture the coined/shaped village. This very day plays viticulture the important role as source of income. Besides there are some enterprises of the local small trade. Meanwhile the border village changed itself also to a Wohngemeinde. Numerous employed person are way commuters, who work in the larger localities of the Pays de Gex or than border crossers in the dye Geneva. The locality is off the larger durchgangsstrassen because of a section road, which of Pougny after Saint Jean de Gonville leads. Thus the vierspurige motorway D884 (Collonges is easily attainable - Saint Genis Pouilly).
